toecarl, we went to the local Jewelry shop and they did our "eski" tag for us, it cost £5 but we knew the lady so maybe something like £10 - £15 (which I think is approx 20 dollars if your in the US)?
(ps it was freehand, so the Kanji would I expect be factored into the cost, though I suspect it depends where your from and who you go to again, as ours was just one side and in the spoken tongue - English)
You can try ThingsRemembered, they have stores all over the country. They engrave and have some basic Kanji (usually stuff like 'love' 'freedom' 'mom'). It is a bit pricey as the Kanji are $6 each, $6 minimum engraving charge, some fonts cost extra and there's an additional fee for carry-ins. They do sell some metal and plastic pet tags as well. They can also take your design and make it readable by the machine, but not in store and there's a minimum purchase. Since I worked there for a bit, I engraved some tags for my boys from charms of discontinued items. Tetsu's regular tag had his name and the Kanji for 'fearless' on one side, and my cell# with barbwire border on the back. He also has a small stainless steel army dog tag for his fancy collar.
You can also check out the dog tag engraving websites and e-mail them asking if they can engrave such and such. If they aren't a big company, they should be able to create a design that can be read by the machine.
