About the MN timberwolf...

edited August 2009 in General
Below is a link to a story from a north-central MN newspaper. This area of MN is about 60-70 miles to the west and slightly north from our farm. Thought it might be of interest to you all considering the tales of Josephine and the Wolf, and various wolf sightings at our farm by Steve. If you can get to the article, you can get to the "readers comments", too. They add stories of more wolf-sightings, some attempts at humor, and some controversy all wrapped into one article with appendages. Hope its of interest...

    Is this the article Bev?

If so, the comments are very interesting. Watch Josephine! Don't want her to end up like the min pin in the story!

OT but wtf is a "Miniature Doberman Pinscher"........
  • edited November -1
Mini Pins..they're about the size of Shao New's head. Fragile little things. I believe genetically they have no real connection to a Doberman except they resemble a mini one in apperance.

Here is a pic to show size difference.

Min pins are supposed to be miniature German Pinchers not miniature dobermans. There is no such thing as a miniature doberman.

ugh, everytime someone calls Sevuk a "mini doberman," I know how you guys feel with the "oh, it looks like a fox!" thing. If i'm in the mood I'll stand there and explain the whole story of the breed but usually a conversation goes like this:

Neighbor: oh, is that a mini doberman?
Me: no, he's a miniature pinscher
Neighbor: yeah, isn't that what I said?
    Me: no (walk away)

Thanks for the article link. I just read it, what's more disturbing was i googled timber wolf images, and i think they are beautiful...and then I saw the hunting images...really disturbing since Spuds really does look wolfy and the images of the dead wolves /hunting ..well disturbed me. I forget, even in the same country/state, there are people out there hunting for what looks like the fun of it...I admit I didn't read the entire hunting website, but why hunt wolves? Do they actually use them or is it for show?? I would assume these people have dogs too so why kill the wolf? I don't get it.

Araks, just an FYI Shao New's boyfriend is the mini pin across the street, so please don't be offended that I said they were fragile ;-)

Haha, guys, we have a Miniature Pinscher and a Doberman along with our AKK. ;).

Like Araks said, there's no such thing as a Miniature Doberman. The Miniature Pinscher predates the Doberman by at least a few hundred years, and are not closely related. They share the same ancestor in German Pinschers, not each other.

It's like if someone said that a Shiba was a "Miniature Akita"..

I hate it when people ask if Luna is a "Miniature Doberman".... if anything, Lantis is a "king-sized Miniature Pinscher"..

But I can't tell you how often I'm seen printed in the news that someone's "Miniature Doberman" did one thing or the other..

And without further ado, some OT Luna/Lantis spam:

Brad: Thanks for honing in on the article. It was hard to find, I think.

Irene: Not sure what's going on with the hunting of the wolves that you mention. Wolves (including the MN timberwolf) have been on the endangered list for a long time (methinks many decades, at least). Now I have heard they have been "delisted", so to speak, in some areas of the U.S. because they are so plentiful. I guess that means there is a hunting or trapping season, too? Anyway, not so in MN. in spite of these stories of the dogs being taken and people discussing large packs of them out and about. My husband rescued Josephine from one about 15 months ago (was chasing the doggie, and then stalked Steve out of the woods as he carried her out on the trail). He said his one regret was that he did not have a camera as the wolf was beautiful. But he loves Josephine better, so he carries a gun when he goes in the woods with Josephine now, and the MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has given him permission to shoot the wolf if the dog or himself is in danger. He has seen one wolf on the game camera this spring, and saw at least two stalking a young fawn about a month ago.

Ever since we got Spuds, she's renewed my interest in wolves. It's a shame all the local zoo's don't have wolves anymore, I remember when I was young there was a pack, and they scared me but I was facinated by them. I wonder why zoo's don't keep them anymore..at least here in the NYC area.. Truth be told I'd still be scared, as the pics show just how large they can be! I still think they are beautiful creatures though...jealous your husband saw one in RL!
