How Many Puppies?

edited September 2009 in General
We were watching "In The Womb: Dogs" a few nights ago and the chihuahua carried only 2 puppies (which had to be delivered by cesarean), while the golden and the mastiff had something like 8 or 11...

How many puppies do Shiba, Kai, Shikoku and Akita have typically?

Shiba-from what I am learning, a really good sized litter would be about 4. I think it's more common for 3 or so, but it really depends on the girl, her size, and her lines.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that it's heavily influenced by the size of the dog. An Akita being a large dog has a large sized litter, I'd say 7-8 being normal. A small dog like a Shiba, as Lindsay said, have smaller litters.. four would be pretty large.

Sometimes the tiny dogs like Chis have been known to have singletons, too.

My little sisters Maltese had a litter of 3 and she was only 5 lbs. Although I think only 2 of the pups made it :(.

Kuma's litter had 6 puppies, 3 male and 3 female. Unfortunately, his Mom fell on 3 of them.

i saw that show too..i was facinated. The golden had 7 and the mastiff 8...and 30+ hours of labor for the mastiff and a C section for the chihuahua...i wonder if the C-section applies to all tiny chihuahuas..i guess so!

I think the more brachycephalic the dog, the more risk of requiring c-section. The Chihs these days have really bulging, round heads that are starting to look this way.

OK I had to google brachycephalic ;-) You're right, they do have big ball type heads..interesting..

Yeah.. the tiny dogs do have higher chances of needing C-sections.. but this applies also to any bitch that has been bred with a much larger male.. Do Bulldogs also always need C-sections? I know that it's standard to always have Frenchies by C-section.

We watched that too! It was so interesting. I thought it was stupid the picked the most hyper-type Mastiff breed to have in the show. Poor Neos have been ruined...

But I think National Geographic has burned a few bridges (*cough* Caucasian Mountain Dog *cough*) in the dog world so they probably didn't have a huge selection of people interested in being in their show. At least that is what I like to think... I'm sure there are plenty of fools who would love the opportunity to be "famous" tho.

    Anyway, on to your question...

For the medium sized Nihonken I would expect 3-5 pups. I dunno about Shiba or Akita, but the others answered for them anyway.

The Cane Corso is interesting, some females only carry 1 - 3 pups while others have freakishly huge litters of like 10+.

I know a lady that breeds Tosa Inu and she has had 12 puppies in one litter before! Crazy!

brachy...like brachiosaurus! :P No I am being silly. Brachy-cephalos are all the smoosh faced dogs. Cephal means head I think,

I dont know the story of Nat Geo vs Caucasian Mtn Dog...do tell!

Wow- CCs- are the smaller litter pups bigger? Do they develop faster with less competition for mom's milk and attention? I mean, I have never her, but Mama Corso must have a lot more nipples than 3.

Nat Geo did a great job of trashing the CO and making it look like an out-of-control monster. They also picked the worst possible criminal breeder CO to be interviewed.

You can do a youtube search and see the vid, I will not post it.

Yes, usually when a CC has a smaller litter like that they tend to have larger pups. I think Bogart was from a litter like that and he is 140lb - 160lb while Xander came from a more normal sized litter (4-6) and is closer 100lb - 120lb.

If you are into blog reading, Chrystal.. retrieverman has talked at length about that CO coverage. Watching it without sound the first time was appalling, then with sound was even worse!

I think Kai's generally have 3-5 pups, but I met one that only had 1-2 each litter. She was a red brindle and one of THE most beautiful Kai.

Koda's mama has had 5 each time.

@Jen - I have read a lot of what retrieverman has to say about the CO and I must say... He doesn't seem like a fan of the breed.

Well, Tojo came from a litter of five, and the breeder was talking about another litter of three and another of four. Rakka was from a litter of four. I'm going to say 3-5 is probably the norm.

Koyote Kennels has a female (Sachi) who had two litters, each with only one puppy and they had to be delivered by c-section, so they stopped breeding her. I think that is definitely the exception.

I can't even imagine those huge litter of 10+ puppies! Man, that would be a full time job and a half!

I don't think he's a fan of many breeds, Brad! Even the 'older' ones..
But he did post that video for anyone who wants to find it quick.

Tsuki was from a litter of 5, she was the 4th born.. or at least her name was "Snowball's #4" when I tagged her.

I used to help my godmother in Chihuahua rescue. I watched a Chi whelp naturally, one chi survived out of two.
    This is that pup:

Lilith's mom is about 15 pounds and in Lilith's litter, there were 4.. to me, that is a lot of puppies.. but what's even more amazing is that Luna's mom, who is about 10lbs, had 3. Her mom looked like a balloon.

I watched that program too! I thought, for the most part, it was very interesting.

From what I've gathered, Shiba, Shikoku and Kai have litters of 3-5. I'm not sure about Akita.

Strange what things you remember from TV shows. Per the tv show "Fringe", the usual size of a litter is related to the number of nipples an animal has minus 1. Humans have 2 nipples, and as such, their "normal" birth is only one child.

Luna has 8 nipples but if a Miniature Pinscher ever had 8, I'd honestly be awed...

oh, Fringe is the best show. i'm so stoked for its return!

Sheep have 2 nipples but usually twin (though I think this is due to human selection), and it isn't unusual for them to have triplets. Cows, on the other hand, have 4 nipples but don't often have more than one calf.

2 shibas per litter is also quite common. ~

I love Fringe too!! The only show I religiously watch :) And Jesse, LOL I was thinking about the nipple minus one as well when I was watching the program!
