Kei Videos:

Kei vs. Tug

Shikoku vs. Cat I

Shikoku vs. Cat II

Kei's first interaction with Lynx

Kei vs. Sleeve

He gets cuter as he matures. I can't believe how different Shikoku pups differ from their adult form. When I first got him, he looked like a mixed breed, lol. Now he is looking more and more Shikokuish. Woo!

He seems to have some great drive already!!  He's going to be a good working dog for you.  Are you going to train him in Schutzhund?  Could you picture a Shikoku flying down the stretch for the courage test?!!  He is very handsome, I really am partial to the darker sesame Shikokus.  The vids of him and the cat made me laugh out loud, the cat is saying "Um, do you know who I am?  Let me introduce myself...smack!"

I love it!  He was cleaning your floor in the first video.

Your cat is so tolerant!  We have had Niko for 2 1/2 years and kitty is JUST starting to come around when the dogs are around.  Sasha is starting to harass Kitty, especially after her recent haircut.

He does have some great qualities. I'm going to be doing abunch of stuff with him, whatever looks like fun basically (Agility, Frisbee, Hunting, Therapy and so forth). I'm definitely training him for Schutzhund Tracking and Obedience; I'm hoping to eventually be able to trial for titles such as the BH, TR & OB. I might be able to get a SchH I on him too, I think it is easy enough. I mean, he has much better drive them most of the German Shepherds I see trialing (think WDA trials, lol)!

    Anyways...

...I do tend to teach Kei the "proper" way to hold when he is playing with his toys. This is something that can be transfered later on in the bitework, if necessary. Right now I'm not training him in Protection persay, but rather fooling around just for kicks and pure amusement. We'll see how he matures. His temperment is so great! He LOVES people of all ages. So it actually would be a good idea to have people see him doing some bitework and then having a 2 year come up and hug him. He'd maul the kid with kisses! He just loved it when a swarm of elementry school kids (about 5-7 of them) were petting him. He didn't know who to say hi to first, he was beyond himself with excitement.

The only problem I see with Kei (in Protection), is that he doesn't always committ. Which can be dangerous in a courage test if he were to come off the bite. And there aren't very many decoys I'd trust to be safe on the catch. Besides, he reacts differently to other people. While he is comfortable with me, he will do bitework for me (and he bites HARD), with me but not necessarly for other people. He is gentle with everybody else and only rough houses with me! I think the others have to "provoke" him and start playing rough, then he will "fight" back. I guess he has to have their permission first???

We'll see...only time will tell. If we are able to trial for all 3 phases, then it'll most likely just be at the club level. Or maybe we'll just play around in Protection in training, but just never actually compete -shrugs-. I think it would be AWESOME though to see a Shikoku "flying" down the field for the courage test. I imagine it'd be the most graceful and beautiful thing ever.

Hahah, yeah Mia is tolerant because she had to put up with Lynx! Malinois puppies are so bad, Lynx especially because she is such a bully. If I'm not a few steps ahead of her, she'd be carrying Mia around in her mouth, I'm sure of it. Mia already gets pissed off when Lynx mouths her and gets her coat all wet with dog slobber, ewww gross! Can you imagine if she had to be stuck in a dog's mouth, being carried around?! She'd probably try and rip Lynx's face off.

Kei is so much more calm and gentle and patience with the cats. He still enjoys chasing them and pinning Mia down, believe me. However, he is so much more careful.

Mia, knowing this, still walks out like she owns everything. Fiskars, on the other hand is super dog aggressive with pushy dogs. She will make a scene, just to make it clear. Which actually...usually ends up making it worse, cause then the dogs want to "push" the kitty - "Look it makes noise! That is so cool!" - for their own amusement. I wonder if I can get this on video...

cool cool, well Kei should do very well in tracking.  I haven't personally seen Akitas do sports, but it appears the medium size Japanese dogs and Shibas of course have a good work ethic.  And that's wonderful that he's so friendly with people and children, he will be a great ambadassador(sp?) for the breed!

Loved the photos and video. Kei is so pretty and what a dark mask he has. The cat videos made me laugh out loud too! Kuma is just about the same age and he is funny with our 4 cats too. But the little rear/leap is so cute that Kei did.

While I don't know much about how to train for Schutzhund (although I did have an acquaintance that went to the World Championships in Schutzhund with her GSD), but it sounds like you will have fun. I think that it is super fun to work with Shikoku as they are really keen learners and quick to want to please. I hope to at least get my CD title o my dog and maybe even CDX or higher. I have never competed, just did the training classes for the CD level (on 2 Siberians), but was never confident enough in their reliability to try competition. Shikoku are much easier to train.

    He is just beautiful Corina.

wow Corina he looks great! Really handsome! I love his colors, and his mask is developing to be really good looking - very impressive!

I loved the slips with the cat, he is so cute - Shikokus are such curious animals. I'd love to see some more video of him and Lynx!
