Japanese Anthology of hunting?

edited October 2009 in General
After looking at Ktrebors site about her dog’s characteristics and the different Nihon. I was wondering if anyone has an idea of a book or historical anthology of hunting techniques used by the Japanese for training the native dog breeds.

I asked a Japanese judge about this but unfortunately this is something he could not answer since he had not used the breed in that capacity or trained them for it.

Specifically I am interested in how the Japanese have trained the dogs to hunt with them and exactly how they used them in their native terrain when working in the past.

I did find out, recently there are American trainers going over to help set up training sessions/schools in Japan for all breed assistance dogs. However, there seems little info. about traditionally what the Japanese hunters have done in the past. The cultural history is either missing by not being written down or maybe it has not been translated.

I have found nothing concrete on it so far for Shibas and only a hint in the book dog man about the Akita. Everything else has been rumored but there isn't documentation.

If anyone has any insights or documented reverences I would love the info to point me in the right direction.

TIA
Snf

In "Japanese Dogs: Akita, Shiba, and Other Breeds" by Michiko Chiba and Lucy North there is true story mentioned in it about a shiba named Tama that rescued his hunting group twice from avalanches. I guess you can say that the hunting the owner did with Tama isn't quite traditional (since he was using a rifle or some western style gun I think), and it is thought that Tama is a Jomon shiba, but maybe looking into tales and stories of famous dogs may help give you an idea of hunting techniques and possibly point you to training.

I also posted this in the discussion about mixed hunting packs.

There was a write-up about Shiba hunting techniques in one of the other blogs. A Japanese Shiba judge described how hunters using Shibas would send out their packs. Usually there was a more experienced Shiba that would locate the prey and the rest of the pack would hold it when found.

Patrice, here is a link to a Japanese breeder's webpage (Nobuo Atsumi). He also has a blog and wrote the article on the Shiba as a Hunting Dog that Sukoshi's Mom posted. I would contact him, as he deals in English also. This has to be one of my favorite breeders sites, Katja has visited him as well as many well known breeders throughout the world.

You will see there are 4 parts, this is to the 4th part
    http://homepage3.nifty.com/shibainu-atsumi/page030.html.
There are a few book titles mentioned about hunting and training, and other info, the first 3 parts detail lineages of Shiba in depth, and discusses some finer points. An interesting read.

If you learn anything new, let me know. I am very curious to do some formal hunting training with the next pup I get.

Thanks for the tips.....I am hoping there will be more forthcoming info and I'll post when I do find out more. It will take a bit of time and I probably will not be able to get to that right away.
