So confused...waist leashes

edited October 2009 in Products & DIY
Ok, so I keep seeing leashes with these rings on the handles that claim to be a waist leash. See this one for example. It is a regular leash, with a ring on the handle. How does that ring make it a waist leash? I have a pretty good head for spatial reasoning and I'm baffled. What am I missing?

Maybe the ring is like a key chain ring & you attach it to your belt loop????

    LOL I'm clueless. ~

I've seen special hiking belts meant for attaching the dog leash to, usually with the use of those clips used for mountain climbing. maybe the ring is meant for the clip to hold onto.

Here is a picture and a video of a belt leash.

I see them worn like a sash than a belt though.

Ah, thanks! So those "waist leashes" are essentially useless for what I had in mind. Good to know. :-)

I know there are leashes made to attach to your waist, for hands free or multidog walks. I assume that is what you were intending. I will see if I can find it.

Yeah, there most definitely are. This one will do the trick, but it seems overkill. And potentially really bulky too. I was hoping for something a little more simple.

Are you looking for something like this Dave? Or are you looking for leather specifically?

Personally, I would wrap around your waist something that isn't thick and/or cushioned unless your dogs never pull or try to chase things. I had one of those clip around the waist nylon leashes and they really dug in when the boys tried chasing a bird/squirrel/garbage. I would go with something like the belts they use in skijoring, here's an example:

It has the back cushion to prevent strain on your back should they pull and some versions even come with a shock system to prevent damage to the dogs.

I'm looking to upgrade to leather. I used to use the "flat out leash" from ruffwear, but I like having matched gear and I don't like the ruffwear collars. I also don't like the thickness of the ruffwear leashes (1"). I prefer 3/4" leashes as it makes hand holding the leashes (which I primarily do) much easier.

Like this but with a clip for the waste?
  • edited November -1
That would work if such a thing existed.

Most of the hands-free/waist leashes I see are like this one or the Ruffwear one you already have. I haven't seen one in leather like you are looking for but perhaps you can request a custom design from a company like LDS since you can use the existing nylon type as the template for what you would want but with all of your preferences noted?

Yeah. I think that's ultimately going to be what I'll do. If they can devise a "semi-fixed" loop (one that you can adjust relatively easily but won't slip under pressure or lack of pressure) then I'd be happy.

Why not just take a regular leash and slip a belt through the handle loop?

lol...yeah your original posting...the ring on the leash would make it easier to wrap around your shoulder or around your waist.

In a (Schutzhund) trial this is where the leash in the "off leash" work needs to be. Also, you are allowed to stuff it in your right pocket and keep it "out of sight"...but sometimes, this can be uncomfortable :( .

That's not felxible enough a solution for what I had in mind. I like using 6 foot leashes but I don't use the full length unless the dogs are goint potty or we are at the very end of our walk and they've been good. If I had leashes through my belt they would be too long and it would be difficult to switch back to hand holding. I want a six foot leash that's 3/4" wide, can clip securely around my waist without slipping or requireing a wordrobe change on my part, and is made from leather. I'm thinking cutom made is the only way to go at this point.

    Hey Dave,
Try checking leashes by design.com ,she makes high quality custom leather leashes and collars. She might be able to make you exactly what you want.

Dave, I missed this post earlier, but consider what I did:

I ordered a "four way service leash" from LDS and had them add a floating ring. I got the 84" length (7 feet). I clip one end to the floating ring to make a noose and sling it over my shoulder. This leaves about a 5.5' drop for the dog which is plenty. The leather will stretch midly over time. The other end I clip to the dog collar. To prevent uncomfortable tightening when they see a squirrel or something, I added a rein stop so it cannot go beyond a certain point. Rein stops look like this: http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-012&ids=747897953

I have two of these leashes and they are a godsend when walking multiple dogs. Lets me be hands-free to wield the poo bags etc.

I tried to find a picture that would show this clearly and this is the best I could come up with without getting out the camera. That is a little local dog yard near a park. It was REALLY cold which is why we had the place to ourselves and why I have so many clothes on...look a bit like Michelin Man!
    I hope this helps.

Thanks for the picture. Quick question what is the width on the leash you are holding.... 5/8" ?? I like the size and it appears not to weigh down the dogs like some of the bungee or other types.

Ah. See, that rein stop is what I needed!

Oh well, next time I guess. I already put in the order for the schutzund trial leashes. They should be shipping any day now. I'm psyched!

Yes, Patrice - they are 5/8". The hardware is perfect for the boys. I find it a bit clunky for Tuli - the round leather yellow leash on the picnic table is hers - it has a more delicate stainless steel snap.

Even so, I certainly wouldn't connect one of the over-the-shoulder leashes to a head halter or anything. I always feel bad for dogs that are getting wapped in the head by the snap of the leash as they walk along. But, that's for another topic...

I think what I would like to have is a leash that has clips on both ends - but still a handle on one end. Has anybody seen something like this?

Nope. But you could get a typical waist leash and use a double ended bolt snap like this one.
