Some Coyote visited the dogs today.

edited October 2009 in General
A bunch of Coyote decided to "visit" the dogs today, they were not very welcomed guests. I think Jen counted 5 total, but by the time I got out there with the camera I just captured these 3. Jen said she saw them right next to the fence, circling and acting very frustrated, and when Luytiy & Masha got to them they all disappeared. She said Masha almost got to one through the fence - that is how close they were!

Your coyote seem a bit better fed than ours out here. Ours are pretty mangy looking. Nice to have the CO's and Blue now i bet!

THey look like Loa from far away LOL ~

Masha is really into it. It's interesting that Blue stayed near you and then marked on the pole.

Must be coyote visiting time. See my discussion thread over on the Shiba forum.

The coyotes in our area are pretty cheeky. They've been known to hang out at local golf courses and parks. There have been reports of coyotes killing small dogs along the parkway as their owners have walked them. (Our city has parkways along the rivers.)

Wow, I'm glad we don't have coyotes near me. It's amazing at how different Masha and Luytiy appear to take the visit (at least from what I can see from the video). Masha is screaming her head off, and Luytiy looked mostly quiet but still making himself known.

It's funny how all the other dogs were running in the direction of the coyotes, but Blue stayed near you. Was he marking like crazy, or just that one time on camera?

That is so fascinating. I would almost feel sorry for a coyote if Masha and Luytiy got to it. How is little Kaia doing?

Whoa! That is sooo cool (or not. depends how you look at it lol)! It's a good thing you've got your big COs. lol I agree with Osy that they look like Loa from afar. Did you get any shots of them with your SLR?

Yea, these Coyote were pretty large - like the size of our Akita girls. The one I got in the video that heads to the end of the fence was smaller, he/she just sat at the fence looking at Masha for several minutes. The other 2 I got on vid were really large. I apparently missed 2 other ones that ran off (Jen told me).

@Gail - I just saw your post, be careful! link

    ----

@Tara - Blue was gated in that area, so he couldn't go out there BUT I opened the gate to let him out while this was going on and he wouldn't leave Jen's side. Then Jen went in the house and he ran out there to where Masha and Luytiy was. Kinda interesting how he is genetically programed to stick close to his person when there is a threat.

    ----

@Beth - Yes, Masha is WAY sharper toward dogs/animals than Luytiy. Luytiy is sharper toward people, they make a good team, I guess. Masha had a lot to say during the event. She is also still young, and keep in mind L is out there 24/7 while she is not, so he probably has become used to the Coyote passing by each night - but it is still new to Masha.

    ----

@Jessica - I would feel sorry for them, for sure. I would hate to see any animal hurt by the guardians. At the same time, the Coyote are either very smart and are certain L is not gonna jump the fence, or they are very stupid to be playing with the CO like that.

Kaia is ok, she will still not use her leg tho, she uses it maybe 1/25 of the time. We are taking her to a specialist on Thursday to see what they have to say - we fear the issue is actually her knee - she has mild LP on that leg - so we think her knee may be slipping out of place from her holding it in that position and so that makes her knee hurt to move - and so she doesn't use that leg. That's the latest theory. :o\

I did get a few pics of them, but I couldn't get to my zoom lens in time. :o( I ran in the house, but I was too late. I'm hoping to get a new camera soon, so I plan to keep the 300mm lens on my current camera at all times so I can just grab it.

    Here is what I got...

And here is Blue's "serious face", I got this when it was all going on after he had run out to the outer area. He was pretty pissed...

We have a large pack of coyotes that roam through here pretty often. When they pass through the Shibas are quick to let us know they are out there. Sometimes as night you can hear the pack talking to each other. One of my female shibas will often join in on the chatter. The Kai puppy usually comes looking for me when the coyotes are around.

Very amazing videos we have Coyotes out where we are since it's sorta countryish I came upon one while walking Bella and Saya the coyote ran off as soon as it saw me so luckily it was afraid I had a big stick just in case, but I doubt that would deter it if it was rabid. haha =(

Now all you need Brad is a Ruger Mini 14 rifle with a nice 4-12 power scope.

The Coyote visited us again this morning...

It was pretty early so all the dogs were not out yet. There was also a hawk flying around, you get a blip of it in the beginning then it flies behind me (you see Luytiy kinda run toward me then turn - he was watching the hawk). Eventful morning!

*The Coyote are super cute. I tried to get a close-up shot but it very hard to hold the camera steady at that zoom level (add wind and cold to the mix and its very hard).

Crazy! My parents have a pair of coyote who wander through their yard (they live on a golf course). Luckily Mylo has never been over when it happened, but it would be interesting to see how he would react.

We don't have coyotes in the Netherlands, however plenty of foxes, even pretty close to where we live, I see several a year, when walking the dogs. They are very beautiful, unfortunately they need 10-15 foxes for one coat :-(

The coyote are cute! I've always been taught to not like them since they have killed a cat of mine, but they are cute. Do they usually just come out in the day so close to the dogs?
  • edited November -1
We have a number of foxes around here too, but we rarely see them.

The Coyote are not usually out in the day, occasionally we will see one run across the street, but usually we only see them at dusk or dawn. Since the moon has been full I think they have been busier at night, and so I think these 2 were on their way home from a night of hunting.

Its rare they come this close to the yard, well, since Luytiy has been here its rare - but before Luytiy (and before the changes to our fence) they would actually come into our fenced yard.

Wow, if they get into your yard, without Luytiy, wasn't that dangerous for the other dogs? Or are the others in size and number more of a danger for the coyotes? If I see them far away on your video, it looks like a shikoku has escaped the property :-)

That is exactly why we got our Ovcharka, to keep the Coyote, Mountain Lion, Hawks, Eagle, and wild dogs away from our smaller dogs. Our Ovcharka (excluding Leila) are our working dogs. Our Cane Corso has a similar role only they are focused more on Personal Protection - to keep predators away from us (Jen and I) while on trail or in the back country.

The Coyote do look a lot like Shikoku! ... But, they are more the size of a large Husky: like 50lb-60lb.
