Deer hunt 3 (warning graphic images)

edited November 2009 in General
So since I got a nice buck earlier in the season, I decided to be the bird dog for my hunting partner. He had a horrible hunting season with a car accident, damage to his family's house from leaking water, and his daughter needing major mouth surgery.

Well we got to our spot at o' dark thirty and sat down on a hill side overlooking a meadow where we have seen deer in the past. Not 10 minutes went by when we see a lone deer through the trees. We see antlers (we can only shoot a buck) and I tell my buddy to range him up and take the deer.

Well the stars aligned perfectly today and he connected to his first deer. This buck had three points on one side and four on the other with two antlers on one side.

Great morning and we were bagged and tagged by 0556.

    Yup, I did see a number 3...

    ...well done!

I wonder...how long does an entire deer or buck like that last you? I know an entire cow would last about a year or so. Deer aren't fat like cows...but I'd imagine 1 adult would still be quite a bit of meat.

    That's awesome!

I'm curious too as to how long the meat lasts...& do you try to use everything?

We knew a guy who use to go up to georgia or alabama, he'd fill his truck with snow & would get 3 -4 deer & bring that back down to FL. He'd butcher them & eat deer all year round! He'd make ground venison to make burgers with, use the stomach, etc. etc. Like he ate everything, & then after a year when his supply ran out hed go back up north & repeat the hunt! LOL ~

When I get the meat back from the butchers, I vaccuum pack them so that I can store the meat in the deep freezer. Usually 60lbs of deer lasts about 6 to 9 months for us.
The only thing I dont use is the bones, the head, and guts.
