Japanese Akita

edited January 2010 in General
I am sending this to you via private message ie whisper. If you need more information regarding Japanese Akita I would recommend speaking with Ben at www.japaneseakitas.org Ben can give you a lot of information regarding the breed and how they are different than the AA. In fact Ben started breeding AA at first but now only breeds JapaneseAkitas.

I am not sure you know this yet, but when I was shopping I was very shocked to learn how many breeders are crossing the AA and JA types to make a Tweenie. While not a total bad deal it would be a shame to buy a JA and find out that it is not pure, or not able to be registered with the Akiho in Japan.

If you need any help feel free to ask. Welcome aboard!!

Thanks for that info. The litter I am looking at the mother is 25% JA and 75 AA. The father though is 100% JA import and very good temperament

    Any thoughts?

IF it was up to me, I would pass on any blended Akita. AA - tend to be very good guard dogs JA - are more of a hunting type dog. Of course looks wise, what makes each type Unique, ends up looking odd when blended together. For example the JA have a more triangle looking face with the ears forward. When blended the ears are much larger and up being straight up. They also end up with a double coat as adults instead of the plush triple coat that the JA get. Cost wise you could track down a pure JA for around $900 pet quality and $1500 show quality in the US. Plus its really cool getting a certificate and serial number from Japan. :)

If you really want a JA then i would say wait and find one that is 100%. If you want a dog right now i would say go with the AA but I would not play with a tweenie. Just my own 2c
