Too cute!

edited January 2008 in Shikoku Ken (四国犬)

My 19 month old son, Isaac really likes Rakka.  Of all the pets, he only says her name (and usually calls strange dogs "Rakka") and lately he has been playing with her.  The other day he brought an armload of teddy bears over to Rakka and made them all "kiss" her on the face one by one by holding them up to her mouth and saying "muah!".  A few minutes ago, he was making her talk on his spiderman cellphone!  She is so patient with him, too.  It really is heartwarming.  I keep trying to get video footage of the adorableness but these little stinkers aren't cooperating!

Anyway, just thought I'd share.  Especially if anyone is considering getting a shikoku and has children and wants to know how they are with kids.  Mine do quite well together!

    Oh yeah, just wanted to add, that when I say my shikoku is good with my toddler, I don't mean it in the sense that a lot of people mean it.  As in, some people believe that in order for a dog to be good with children, they have to put up with being hit, stepped on, and having their ears and tail pulled.  Honestly, Rakka doesn't put up with this kind of stuff and I don't feel that she should have to.  She does give warning growls to kids that pester her and after that, she usually gets up and leaves.  Which is why I keep the dogs in their crates when other people's kids come over - it's to protect my dogs!  Anyway, just thought I'd add that I think shikokus can coexist quite nicely with children who are respectful.

    That is so cute!  I love it!  Awesome that she just gets up and leaves.

    DONT get me started on other peoples kids and my dogs.  My in laws all came (20+) for a week and sister in law invited herself and 3 kids to stay and got mad at us for not locking our dogs up and getting upset at how they treated my dogs...THIS IS THEIR HOUSE!  I gave her a number to the hotel.  PEACE OUT!

    <vent over but still fuming>

    That's awesome Heidi! And adorable, I hope you can catch them in the act, even if it is just a photo...something for show along with the tell -smiles-.

    Kei is GREAT with kids! He just loves anybody and everybody though. He may very well be a Therapy dog, but we'll see how he matures. I want to make sure he is completely "bomb-proof", so we'll see how his adolescent stage goes...

    Kuma is the same way...certainly not standoffish like much of the literature says about Shikoku. He especially loves kids and is VERY good around them (although I have no kids, when he is around them, even little ones, he is great).

    I finally got video evidence of the adorableness!  Sort of anyway.  As soon as Isaac realized I had the camera out, he got shy and ran away to hide.  Even so, here's a link to the video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqfk_r9vn0c

    Also, here's a picture of Isaac using Loki as a pillow.  My exotic Canadian primate coexists so well with my canines!

    Tenji, also, is wonderful with our grandchild. He continues to be very interested in people and is very friendly with most everyone he meets.   I say "most" because if he smells a strange dog then he becomes very cautious.
