I had a similar thought about her size and the link between the two - perhaps its connected, I dunno. I've noticed that dogs that have hereditary issues tend to have a few different ones, so that could simply be the link. (think about it: Ahi's size and ortho issues; Hilo's ears, teeth, legs; Lani's repro, thyroid, size; Kahuna's hips, knees, and brain...)
TBQH, its put a big change in our plans. Osy, I'm just not gonna do it anymore, I cannot continue to waste all our efforts and money on this. Clearly, we are not meant to breed. We've decided to not breed Kai, we'll continue with our plans for the Shikoku, simply because we have people waiting for pups, then we will take a hard look at that breeding program too. We're expecting a male from Katja, so we'll continue on that plan.
I will talk to Shigeru about transferring the import plans to you guys, so you can import a male Kai if you want. Please don't mention it to him yet tho, I have not told him of our plan change. Once I do that, I will send an email and connect you guys on the topic.
I'd really hate for you guys to give up your breeding plans...you've come a long way, even tho you've been hit by a lot of bad things, it's because you guys are trying to do it the "right" way. I think it'd be more of a "waste" if you stopped now. [ kind of like on fear factor when the people make it all the way to the last stage then give up ]
Losing you guys would be a big hit to the breeding community, esp. for shikoku & kai.
But, I understand where you guys are coming from. & It's not easy to either continue or to stop. You have my support either way, you guys need to do whats best for yourselves
but
I would NOT go so far as to say you guys aren't "meant" to breed. That's an insult to yourselves, & I don't like it when someone insults my friends I don't think anyone else was "meant" for it more. You & Jen have the passion, the love, the dedication....so don't say you're not "meant" for it.
Like I said you guys have been hit with more shit than most breeders, but you guys are / were taking the "right" route, the "harder" route, so it's only natural. If you wanted to go the easy route, you'd breed regardless of health problems & keep those health issues a secret to yourselves. But you don't. & That's why I've had so much faith in you two.
I've been waiting on a pup for 2 years Brad! & you know why I keep waiting? Because I know the good things in life don't come easy, and they sure as hell don't come quickly. [ this coming from the girl who has no patience for anything else ]
Anyways, yes, if you guys ultimately decide to stop breeding kai &/or shikoku let me know where that leaves me with my plans. [ so I can make other arrangements & talk to other breeders ]
TBH, if I'm not co-owning with you guys, I'd kind of rather not bother importing. I was sort of following you & Jen's lead, but I'm not sure I "trust" anyone else to co-own with, OR loan my pups out for breeding stock.
You & Jen are the ones I trust, so you & Jen are the ones I follow If you guys give up...not sure where that leaves the rest of us to make a difference.
But, if you decide to go the non-breeding route, I'd still like to talk to Shigeru about it. I would hate for your importing plans & connections in Japan to go to waste. The only thing is we can not fly there ourselves & pick up a pup, so importing might not be possible for us...but I guess we should still try.
