Hey Shigeru, I was wondering if you could help me on the import/export procedure because the websites just confuse the heck out of me. The gentleman that is going to help me get my hokka has never exported to the US before and he's a bit lost himself.

Here's the lowdown on puppy exports to the States. One thing to keep in mind is that some States have their own rules for incoming dogs, so best to double check on your end.
1. Pup must be over 2 months old to be shipped.
- If under 3 months it can be shipped with no vaccinations
- If over 3 months it will need to have a rabies shot a minimum of 30 days prior to shipping.
- If over 4 months it will need the full range of vaccinations
2. The dog will need to be examined at the animal quarantine center of whichever airport it will be flying out of on the day of the flight.
- Exam reservation needs to be made a minimum of 1 week prior to flight.
- Pup will need a health certificate signed by a veterinarian stating that it is free from signs of rabies/lepto, and is in good health. If applicable it will need all the dogs vaccination information and microchip information will need to be included. This certificate of health needs to be issued a maximum of one week prior to flight.
3. The pup's crate needs to adhere to IATA standards, it must be able to turn around inside, and its ears must not touch the roof of the crate when it is standing/sitting.
4. If you are picking up the pup and taking it back with you then you will need to make arrangements with your airline 30days-72hours prior.
- If you are shipping the pup unaccompanied (as cargo) you will need to make arrangements through a shipping agent a minimum of 1 week prior to your desired shipping date.

There is no official format for the 'health certificate' that you have to turn in at the quarantine center. The AQS website basically tells you the information that it needs to have on it, and you or your veterinarian have to make the form and fill it out.
I hope this helps. If there's anything you need help with let me know. I don't know where the pup is at, but I live around 40 minutes away from Narita International Airport so am available. If for some reason it's too much trouble for you or the breeder to deal with export arrangements it's sort of become part of my translation business portfolio.
Ooo so you don't need vaccinations if the pup is under 3 months. I was really confused because I thought you needed the rabies vaccine so you couldn't export a dog under 3 months but then I saw Brad getting Nori at 8 weeks. Makes a lot more sense now.
We're still going back and forth on whether we want to pick the pup up or not. I guess it just depends on what else is going on at the time. If we do you're obligated to come hang out with us btw :P
