Brad said "Chupa has got to be one of the smartest pup we've owned, maybe the smartest... Maybe even smarter than Ahi, which is setting the bar very high.
Chupa, at 11 weeks, already has a solid sit, down, and down-stay! 11 weeks! Can you believe that? We can put him in a stay and walk across the room! His impulse control is a lot better than Blue's was at this age (or the age he is now. LOL)."
Maybe you've got an obedience dog too! :-) Kuma was that way at 11 weeks too, very good impulse control and like a rock on sit or down stays (even as a puppy). So that bodes well for Chupa being a good obedience dog for you. :-)
@Tara -"Have you ever tried Kona off leash?" >> No, Kona's recall is not great. We have worked on it some but not enough. Had I worked him off-lead from a very early age, like Chupa or Blue, I'd be more interested in trying it... But now, I think its too risky. We are working Tai off-lead some, and Mochi would probably do ok as she likes to stick close to Jen - she's just so small, it makes me nervous.
@Kris - I think you are right! He would probably make a great obedience dog.
Aww yes, the Kai no-recall. Koda's sucks sometimes too. He's a free thinker and stubborn.
For off leash hiking/walking I use the command "walk with me" rather than recall. I start when the puppy is very young. I don't use heal, but rather walk with me when teaching heal walking/no pulling walking on leash. Everytime I take out the leash for a walk I say walk with me. They get so excited to hear it. Then I take it to a controlled environment and use walk with me on/off leash. When I feel like they have got it, I go off leash in a less controlled environment. Dogs seem to like the word walk rather than hearing their name for recall.
You are a much more experienced owner than I am, but you might want to use it with Chupa and see if it works. Koda and now Maymay both do great with off leash walking even though their recalls are less than perfect. Maymay's is better than Koda's due to fear of being left behind.
Brad if you don't bring Chupa the next time you visit Cali, I will cry and that'll make Micah cry so you'll have us crying REALLY loud and making you feel bad :P
Watch out Loa in about 3 weeks that pup is going to be your size! And his mom could eat you. lol. I think Chupa has the right idea....get the CO to have your back!

Chupa is really cute. I like the looks of his dam a lot! Fingers crossed that this puppy (finally!) meets all your expectations!
By the way, we're waiting for the "duck feet" photos!
Here are some recent vids of him:

I love Jen's little dance btw :P
Such a cool little man.

Yes, Loa feels the need to be "tough" to the little 4 week old pups. LOL. Here's a clip where "Carr" (pup #9) gives it back to her a bit...
