Kai Obedience

An acquaintance of mine is a vet/hunter and has owned several types of hunting dogs over the years. He has a Kai at the moment. Here's a video of him doing some obedience with him. After watching this maybe one day I'll put forth the effort to obedience train Haru!

His dog is very good and focused! I find obedience training is a lot of fun and the dogs seem to enjoy it. I do it more for fun than for competition, but I try to get good precision like your friend and his Kai.

Shigeru, if Kai are like Shikoku (which I have never met a Kai in person), they are super eager learners and like obedience (especially using clicker training. Both my 2 1/2 year old Shikoku male and my 3 1/2 mo old Shikoku female seem to be really quick learners and also very precise and accurate. I can say that Sachi, the female puppy, is about at the same stage as Kuma was at that age and is GOOD. Much better than my Siberians ever were. I am always amazed at how quickly they learn and how precise they are. And motivated. Your friends Kai is that way too. Just look at how he heels, with his eye on his owner. That is hard to train if the dog doesn't do it innately.

Good luck! I bet you would have fun with Haru!

Kai are quick learners and super smart, most are pretty food motivated and willing to please too - the issue I have found with Kai is keeping their attention. You have to be VERY fast when training them as they will offer behaviors super quickly, and if you don't capture them quick enough, the Kai will start to lose focus/interest. Clicker training works really well for them IMHO, and training one-on-one works really well, but in a class setting it can be VERY HARD to keep their attention.

Ditto exactly what Brad said. He really described Kai training to the tee!
