Nippo Kanto Event 2010/5/2

edited May 2010 in General
So went to the Nippo Kanto Event today. Crazy traffic on the way, around 40km to be exact. We've just entered 'Golden Week' which is a week or so of holidays here in Japan. Beautiful weather though, it actually got T-shirt hot.

Since the Nikon is functional again my wife ran around snapping pictures. I was busy with dog stuff most of the day, so happy she tagged along. I think this is like the second time I've gotten her to come along to a Japanese dog breed event.

Beautiful pics! I hope the next time I go to Japan there is an event close to my wife's town as I'm really curious to meet a Kai-ken in person.

BTW, I admire your commitment to drive on the highways during Golden Week! I did that once and will never intentionally schedule a trip to Japan during this week ever again!!!

What great pictures. These dogs all look amazing, but my heart is still with the kai pups. ;-) Yes I'm totally bias!

This is Riku, the Kai that everyone knows from Youtube. His owner has told me several times to say hi to Brad. Says he's been lazy and hasn't been putting up so many videos, but it's cause he's getting sent all over the place at work. I meet him and Riku at dog events quite often.

Hey, cool! Riku! :o) He is my fav. YouTube Kai (next to Haru, of course). Tell them I said hi as well, when you see them again. :o)

    Great pics!

So the first Shikoku posted (in the first post), really nice marking him/her, but is it me or does he/she not have a chest?

Yeah, young female Shikoku. No chest yet. I'm not so hot on the spots above her eyes.

    Shigero,
I caught the "counting teeth" picture. From your experience how do most dogs react to this? From what I understand misbehavior during this does not count against the dog.
When I take Koshi to the Nippo classic they are going to do this & I have a feeling koshi is going to be very intolerant of a stranger in her mouth.

It's usually the owner that presents the teeth to the judge if that's any help.

The owner opens the mouth while the judge counts. A certain amount of misbehavior does not count against the dog, but dogs that will not show their teeth, or show too much aggression are penalized. If in the end the judge is unable to get a count the dog can be disqualified.

Ok out of curiosity, so the dots about the eyes indicate what in a Shikoku? Why is this non desirable? In Shibas the white dots in puppies often get larger and in older age one will often see where it has morphed into white mask.

Is the dog in the teeth counting photo a white Shikoku or Kishu? At least the owner is allowed to show the teeth of the dog rather than having the judge manipulate the mouth. There is a new rule in place now that judges are supposed to let the owner or handler do this for health reasons not spreading virus' (canine influenza?). However, at many standard (non nippo) shows in the U.S. the judges still insist on poking around.

I'm all for that Kishu jumping up like that. Koda and Maymay would do the exact same thing if some stranger was in their mouth. I take it as an NK thing and they should let them do it.

Bravo to the Nippo Classic here in the US that will allow for a dog being a dog!

The dots around the eyes are fine. As long as they are not that large, and are clean circles it's not a problem. Like you said, if left unchecked, after a few generations the white starts spreading. You do see this in Shiba quite often. I just personally don't like the position/strength of the spots on that female. I think it kind of looks strange is all.

And the white dog is a Kishu. White is not desirable in Shikoku, and while I'm not sure if they'd automatically disqualify a white in the ring, I'm sure it would be severely penalized.
