Good news for the two pups!

I was sent these video's today by TUAPA, a rescue group, in Taiwan. They want to know if these are Kais. Can you all help me out with your opinion?

There are 3 dogs in question. One female around 2 1/2 years old named Foxy, and two male pups both 4 months old and littermates.

This 4 month old pup breaks my

They all look like Kai to me, the white toed one may be mixed, but they all look and act pretty Kai-like IMHO.

Very sad. The 4 month old is so scared. :o(

I think I've turned Red with the No. Ca. Shiba Inu Rescue onto Kais. He's totally into them now and getting to know more about them. He has a real interest in saving the scared one. Who really looks like Koda's mom at that age. Koda would have been that exact way in a situation like that.

I think we have found a home for the other outgoing pup. I spoke to a man about Maymay last week in Eureka, and I think that she would suit his wants more. He has had Jindo rescues in the past.

So, the two pups may be flying to the Bay Area. The shy one will stay with Red possibly until she can find a home.

Oh, and I need to correct my post. They are all girls.

And they all have black spotted tongues.

That is so sad--the young one looks so scared! She moves and acts much like my female Shiba, who was undersocialized and timid when I got her at 4.5 mos. old.....Bel's come out of it some, but she's still a timid, crazy little thing.

    I hope they find homes...

The adult with the white toes has a snipier head shape than the Kai pictures I've seen. Is she still within the range of a female Kai?
She also doesn't raise her tail up as high as a Kai's during the videos even while moving. It's unclear if that's all mood or just her natural tail set.

The first thing that sprang to mind however is that in Taiwan they have an indigenous breed of dog, that genetically is similar to some of the NK. It has spitz like characteristics, some are brindle, and most have tongue spots. They're coats are usually shorter, but I've seen pictures of dogs with coats like these.
http://www.tabitabi-taipei.com/more/2005/0217/ Unless the previous owner is saying the dog is a Kai, I don't know.

I guess it's possible they could be Kai, or Kai mixes. I've stopped guessing about dog parentage a long time ago. But the apparent lighter coloring on the inside/underside on one of the pups throws me off for one. Kuro-tora that black are usually pretty solid colored, with the white spots (like the chest spots) being very defined.

The pups are cuties and look like they could be Kai. I have a question in my mind about the adult female. She seems a little leggy (as in long-legged) and face shape, fur, a few other characteristics that others mentioned seem a tad bit "un-Kai" like. But then, what do I know? Haven't seen too many of the Kai's up front and personal! Probably Shigeru is on to something with her at least...

I didn't think the older one was a Kai at all or maybe a mix. That was my guess.

Oh Shigeru, Foxy does look like a Formosan. But it says that they are almost extinct. That's sad.

Shigeru, the link you posted doesn't work :(

But it is intriguing, because I kept thinking how could so many of a relatively rare NK end up in Taiwan? Maybe it is a version of a native Taiwanese breed? And maybe they are Kais, who knows? It's actually not THAT many in the scheme of things, and it does make sense that more rare NK might be more common in neighboring Asian countries.

You know, when I lived in Japan, I saw lots of Shibas and lots of other dog breeds but no other NK....but I was also in Osaka and not looking for them, and I imagine they are not common in big cities. I do remember trying to talk to my students about Akitas (I had just had to put down my AA before I went to Japan because she had cancer) and my students were absolutely puzzled by why I'd be interested in such an uncommon breed, which at the time puzzled me....

Ok, that was only very tangentially related...sorry...I'm digressing tonight.

eta: and you all are really making me want a Kai....

Here are some additional pictures of Formosan dogs: http://www.dogs.com.tw/gooddog080924.html

It looks like Formosan's ear set tends to be straight up. The two pups' ear sets appear to be more off to the side of the head with the tips angled outward.

The fur quality is also thicker/longer in these pups. Even though there is supposed to be a mountain version of the Formosan (and in general, mountain dingos are double-coated, more thickly furred, and have smaller ears), the existing Formosan pics don't seem to include dogs like the pups.

Perhaps the pups could have some sort of north Asian influence in addition to Taiwanese influence.

I think that the older one Foxy looked more like the Formosan, not the pups.

Hei Mei (the scared pup) looks almost exactly like Koda's mom at that age.

Well got a bit of news. The two pups are coming to the US. Red is going to take the scared pup and start working with her. I think we are going to have a Kai/Shiba Inue Rescue. lololol.

Hei Ha has possibly found a home in No. California. It is with a gentleman that I spoke to about Maymay. I think that Hei Ha would have a great home with him, and I hope it works out. I also told him about the forum, so hopefully he visits us.

Forgive me for my ignorance but is there a huge demand for Kai kens in taiwan and other asian countries? Just wondering cause I'm guessing when a breed becomes popular, they start to show up in rescues and shelters.
