odd coyote behavior (video)

edited June 2010 in General
So one of the my friends had this on her FB page, and it was so odd I thought I'd put it here and see what you all thought:

It's billed as a coyote "attack" but it's more just a long and odd interaction between a person and a coyote. My friend said, oh, it's just the coyote trying to play, but that seemed a little....naive? Optimistic? Or perhaps that's just my mistrust of coyotes. Mostly I wondered if it was really a tame one or if they were luring it with something to take the video, because it's behavior is odd for a wild animal.

the coyote is beautiful, though.

I find that video fascinating. Indeed the coyote is gorgeous. Her behavior didn't seem outwardly aggressive, but it also didn't seem completely playful. I wonder if she was protecting a nearby den. The guy is funny. He is a little dumb though he will yell at the coyote to get away and then attempts to entice him. Poor thing is probably so confused.

I am looking forward to reading other peoples input.

That was a great video i really enjoyed it. I Really think it was just a brave young coyote that hadn't had any bad human experiences to make her wary of humans ,it's also possible that she was an orphan & was never taught to fear people. Just a couple guesses, but neverless fun to watch. Thanks !

First thing that comes to mind watching that is rabies.

To me, this looks like something that happens often for this guy with this coyote. If he lives right there, there is a good chance the coyote eats his trash and sticks around. JMHO

@Brad....hmmm....that makes a lot of sense. The coyote is already used to him, so while it's hardly tame, it's also not as fearful as a wild coyote who had never met him might be. And honestly, I wondered if he'd been feeding the coyote too.....tossing him food or something, so she became accustomed to him.

They guy is actually pretty annoying, and think the video gives the wrong impression of how to act with wild animals, but it was also just....odd.

The coyote looks very healthy so that is good.

Yea, I agree the guy is kinda annoying in the vid (also a little funny)... and, if this was you first encounter with this coyote, acting in this way, he even bites your boot - would you just turn around and walk away at the end like that??? That's why I think there's a level of trust built between them from prior encounters.

I haven't watched the video yet, but yeah a wild coyote definitely would have been scared I've come upon them a few times and they've run away every time I always carry a big stick just in case and when I do come onto one I make enough scary noises to make it not want any contact with a human or at least me.

Tomorrow I'll try to watch the video to see what's it about hopefully the internet works with me..

Watched this yesterday I think it's his pet or could be rabies who knows, but the guy seemed pretty calm and he was calling the coyote to come a wild one wouldn't respond to that unless it was taught it..
