I'm picking up my KBD on Sunday. I have one possible name picked out, but in the interest of not prejudicing anyone, I won't disclose.
Can anyone throw a name my way? The pup is a female. I like native names--in this case, Russian or Finnish.
Right on Kevin! Are there a good number of KBD hunting dogs in NA? I have seen them for chasing grizzlies out of the parks and if you have bears in your parts, you might have a great bear dog. I will look up some names
Henna = home ruler Neida = grace, favour Siiri = Finnish short form of Silgrid, which derives from the Old Norse name Sigríðr, which was derived from the elements sigr "victory" and fríðr "beautiful, fair". Tilda = short form of Matilda, which derives from Germanic name Mahthildis meaning "strength in battle" Tuula (TOO lah) = wind Varma = certain Virva = will o' wisp
Interestingly, even before I posted, my girlfriend and I decided tentatively on Tuuli or Tuulikki. If you have more names, though, keep them coming! I wish I liked the pronunciation of Virva better, but there's nothing about that name that I think would really grab a dog's attention. Perhaps stupidly, I think there should be something about a name that makes a dog go "Oh, me?" when it's said. I like when names have a long i sound or end in i, y, or ee. Solomon's name is pretty boring, but the S grabs his attention and I usually just call him Solly anyway. Kayla's dog is named Darcy, which is really in keeping with my theory.
Why did any of you name your dogs what you did? What process did you go through to choose a name? Sometimes, a dog just looks like he should be named George--that's a good enough reason for me!
I have no name suggestions, but I just wanted to say congrats! ... And make sure you post pics! I'm stoked to watch her grow... between you, Jessika, and Sarah we will have a pretty good community of KBD / REL! )
Congrats! Can't wait to see pics. I think KBD's are way cool!
I'm bad with names, but my naming theories are similar to yours. I prefer two syllables, for some reason, and I like them to end in i, y, or e, too (I feel like read somewhere that dogs respond better to that sound, but I can't remember where I read that or even if I really did!).
I like Tuula and Siiri.
I went through a book of exotic kids names for my dogs (and a book of pet names, but I didn't like many of those). I'm a writer and teacher of writing/lit, so at first I wanted literary names (which I promptly rejected all of as too long. Can I really call a dog Caliban for example?) Toby just sounded....right...and there is a writer I like a lot named Tobias Wolfe, so it was kind of literary. I was going to my girl Shiba Jade, but when I got her, she just was not a Jade, so another name I liked is very simple: Belle, but I wanted her to have a longer name, so I named her Jezebel and shortened it to Bel. I call her Jezebel when she is bad.
Kai, my GSD, I named because he came with the name Piper, which is ok, but I wanted to name him, and I wanted one that had a similar sound (the "i" sound). Kai is "ocean" in Hawaiian which I liked, and actually his name was Kaibutsu (monster) but I never called him that.
I do think it is funny that I gave my GSD a Japanese name, and never even thought of giving my NKs Japanese names! (Well, Haiku and Tanka were possibilities, but I rejected them).
Anyway, good luck with names and can't wait to see pics!
Here is a website I found. You may already be familiar with this kennel. What I found interesting is that they have a KBD that has been CARDA certified to do SAR. http://www.karelianbeardog.us/index.html
Very exciting! I read someplace that dogs do best with a two-syllable name. How this was determined I have no idea!
Some more Finnish names for your consideration Aamu "morning" Aino "the only one" Eija (eijaa is a happy exclamation) Kukka "flower" Lahja "gift" Lempi "love" Marketta (form of Margaret) Lumi "snow" Noora (form of Nora) Minttu "mint" Satu "fairy tale" Sisko "sister" Suvi "summer" Tahti "star" Taika "magic" Taru "legend" Vappu "rule of the fortress"

Siiri is my favorite based on how it sounds. :-)

Tuula sounds nice.
Congratulations on your puppy, that is an awesome specimen.
