  • Will do.
  • 2nd that! Great to hear that Tuula is doing well but pics of the pretty girl would be fabulous.
  • Congrats on the great progress, and I agree, more pics! :D I love KBDs, it's a beautiful breed, in every way.
  • I just read everything Tuula sounds like a great dog she's a pup so she got some growing to do, but once she's an adult I bet she'll be awesome!

Bella my parent's boxer was crazy with her pulling as a pup she was great off leash, but gone through a phase where she wouldn't listen, but she is getting better now at not pulling and coming to me when called.

Coarse Saya is awesome as always she is so interested in rabbits, squirrels, and any type of big bird, crows, hawks, and vultures.

Saya chased after a hawk that was on the ground she stopped once she chased it into the woods and ran back to me. My heart sunk so much. lol

Saya may not be a hunting dog, but she loves to chase things. She also lead my mom to me I walked in the street to look at the horses and she pulled my mom where I was by sniffing where I went..

She has also found a opossum in our tree at night by the house she wouldn't move till I put the light on and saw what it was..

Good luck with Tuula I bet she'll grow into a great hunting dog. =)

I love KBD I've seen them on TV a lot where they are used to chase bears.
  • Exactly what Dave said, I have seen some dogs that turned into couch potatos just becausetheir owners didn't take the time while they were young. Lots of hunters I have met expected their labs or pig dogs to perform after the first year and thats far from the trueth. I got really lucky with Hana as she bloomed into a great bird dog before she turned a year old.

Riki took a fw years to figure things out and Taro is catching on fast and I know he can get things done as long as I can put him on some hogs. #2 is showing tons of peromis but I have to expect the worst from her so that I dont get my heart broken if she dosn't hunt. I have found that with big game dogs (especially with NK), it takes a crap load of time and effort which can drive one crazy. It is so much easier to prep a bird dog then it is a big game dog.

Kevin I'm sure Tuula will mature and hunt better as time goes so dont give up bro!
  • Are going to hunt only small game with Tuula? In Finland hunters spent dogs first year just walking with their dogs in the nature. Some might also take puppy to hunt couple of years times. For real they start to hunt with them when they are about 2-3 years old. Finnish native dog breeds best age in hunting is from 4-8 years old.
  • Thats very similar to how Kishu boar dogs are brought up although I like to allow my young dogs to experience a live pig a few times before they reach a year old.
  • Several great hunts lately. Tuula is maturing nicely and I learned today to trust her implicitly; she's basically always right, even when I'm dead certain she's wrong.
Her nose is good. She was having some trouble distinguishing between medium and hot tracks and made a few empty trees., But today she was unbelievable. Made several great trees and if I weren't a lousy shot, she would have gotten us our limit.

  • Sweet! Do you have any pics of Tuula now? How big is she?

Tara, I have no idea how to post! I feel like an idiot! Can you help?
  • Ofcourse do you have a flickr or photobucket?
  • send me the files tjbart17@yahoo.com
  • Or I have a picasa account. Does that do anything?
  • Hmmm I'm not sure. Do they have a html code that you can take to share the pic?
  • Here's Tuula! Kevin she's adorable.

Sorry it took me a minute. My neighbor popped by.

  • @MirkaM Yeah, I'm probably going to just small-game hunt with her. That's mostly what we have around here.
  • @tjbart17 Thanks! She looks good. Hard to believe these are cell-phone photos!
  • She's beautiful.
  • Wow! So, do you eat what you catch, or is it more of a pest control thing? She is great! What a little hunter.
  • She looks great Kevin! Those raccoons are huge. lol
  • Wow man, she is maturing beautifully! I'm so glad to hear she's doing so well. :-)
  • Great looking dogs!

Tuula is beautiful and the other two are some nice looking dogs too. =)

    double post sorry.
  • @brada1878 Indeed, those 'coons are SWOLL! I wouldn't let her fight them after they were shot out--one of them just about outweighed Tuula.
@lindsayt The squirrels I eat, though it sounds strange. Their meat is a lot like dark turkey. The dogs get the leftovers and the nasty bits.
The 'coons get sold to a fur buyer. Next time, I'm feeding the raccoon meat to the dogs, though.

Tuula and I went hunting today, even though I didn't think we'd have much luck. I didn't have to work, and had some time on my hands.
Long story short, we limited out on squirrels in about 1.5 hours. She was amazing. I couldn't be more proud of her. She's dead tired, sleeping on the couch next to me. Usually, she's a live wire at night. I'd post photos, but there's not that much difference between these and the other photos I've posted.
  • Thats bad ass Kevin. Man my dogs are falling waaay behind the curve. I need to find some hogs for my pups.

    Congrats Kevin!
  • I would love to see what Tuula would do with a pig. I was just asking Kayla about that the other night. We determined she would definitely bay, but would have the brains to keep her distance. One time, she bayed a deer hunter up in a stand. It was about the funniest thing I've ever seen. She was NOT sure what that thing up there, but by golly, he was something to be shot.

Aww you just turned me off on squirrel lol. I hate turkey
  • I wish I had a decent camera right now.
Tuula is being hilarious. She's jumping up onto the couch to harass Darcy, stealing Darcy's bone just to pick a fight. It's apparent she has no interest in the bone; she's just trying to start trouble. She just kind of keeps starting trouble and runs away laughing. It's great.
