Inbreeding Depression

edited July 2010 in General
Was wondering if anyone has ever heard of Inbreeding Depression?

i've been doing a lot of reading lately & stumbled upon it somewhere, but haven't been quite sure what it was. [ & of course, every explanation I've looked at has been complex & confusing ]

I think I get the jist of it...but I'm wondering if this has happened in any dog breeds?

Wiki

& an intersting comment on it...

"In some ways, though, the breeding of purebred dogs is akin to this, except that the lines are our breeds, most of which are becoming progressively more inbred. My observation is that most are on the road to extinction, but most breeders do not even realize they are part of an experiment."~

It has, but you need to have statistics over a population over time to observe such things as a reduced size in litters, decreased lifespan, etc. You also should have a 10 generation pedigree in order to have meaningful "coefficient of inbreeding" numbers, which is just one way to calculate probable inbreeding.

Have you tried the following website for reading?
