Dog day care recomendations in Madison Wisconsin? plus tips with staying in a hotel with dogs..

edited August 2010 in General
I'm going to the Madison WI for the shiba picnic.

On Thursday we plan to go so we have Friday to do various things. In the morning we plan to take the dogs walking somewhere and after that we plan to go to this one water park.

My question anyone know of any good Dog day care in that area?

I'd kinda like to take the dogs to the day care, but for this trip it might be too much for them at once I dunno I think it might be better to leave them in the hotel in their crates? Which do you think we should do?

I've never stayed at a hotel before Will the dogs be fine in the rooms they'll be in their crate with their kong to play with. I plan to put do not disturb on our door so no cleaning people come in or anything..

Taking them to the day care is my mom's idea it's a nice one yeah, but Saya and Bella never been to the one I've been wanting to take them too so who knows how they'd act they're both friendly with dogs, but it kinda makes me nervous..

Plus with The picnic on Saturday I think it'd be best they stayed in their crates while we went out..

I'd still like to have a recommended day care just in case..

Have you've ever leaved the dogs in the hotel before? I got some nightmare where some staff member steals Bella and Saya.. lol

Any tips on staying in a hotel with dogs? This will be our first time and I want to be prepared our dogs are pretty well behaved so they won't chew things up plus we'll crate them if we need to get breakfast or when we need to go out without them..

Sorry for the wall of text..

My mom just pop the question if we should take the dogs to dog day care while we go to the water park..

With day care if a dog has had enough with the dogs and want to rest do they have a separate room for those dogs or how do they handle it..

  • Hmm. My suggestion is to keep Saya and Bella at the hotel. Since they have never been to a doggy day care before, it may not be the best idea to make their first time in a city both you and they are unfamiliar with and with people that you have never met.

They should be fine staying in the hotel room by themselves. I probably should know this, but I am going to assume that they are both crate trained. (I know that Saya is, but I do not remember if you ever said that Bella was.) If they are fine with their crates, they should be okay for a few hours by themselves. Make sure the hotel staff knows that they are there alone and crated. This is for their safety, in case a fire or some other hazard should break out.

I have left my pups alone in a hotel room for a couple of hours at a time. I have ALWAYS let the hotel staff know that they are there and in crates in case of an emergency. I have never even had the thought that a hotel staff member might steal them... Somehow I doubt they would, because both you and your mum (and someone else at the hotel) know that they are there. And my two are not likely to go with someone unfamiliar quietly. I am sure that Bella can let out a pretty ferocious bark if she feels threatened. So I would not worry about leaving them alone. I would just not leave them alone for more than a couple of hours at a time. They will most likely be a little nervous as they are in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar noises.

    Just some tips...
Bring something to occupy them. Something that they LOVE. Bully sticks or a Himalayan chew would be great for a couple of hours of down time. (Note, probably not a good idea to give these to them while they are unattended, though)

A kong or similar chew toy would be great when you have to leave them. I would keep the window coverings closed to make it nice and dark in there. That way, they are more likely to just relax the afternoon away while you are out. Turn the TV on as well. TV noise is familiar (unless you rarely watch TV) and will help drown out the noises of other guests at the hotel.

Hope this helps! I am not too familiar with doggy day cares, so I will let someone else answer those questions for you! Good luck and hope you guys have a blast! (TAKE TONS OF PICTURES!)
  • Most doggy daycares will not accept a dog without an interview first with some sort of behavioral test. I would tire them out with a walk and make sure to have treats like stuffed kongs and such for the crate time.
  • Thanks I knew that would be the best option. Bella is crate trained. I plan to bring their kongs and some peanut butter to freeze that should keep them busy the room I'm getting will have a fridge so it'll be nice and frozen..

I plan to bring their toys, chew toys, and there's a dog store there that sells deer antlers so we plan to buy those to keep them busy.

They're pretty good in their crates I have a cover on it to make it more den like. TV on is a good idea too.

Letting the staff know is a good idea in case of emergency. Only time we plan to leave the dogs is when we go to the water park we'll probably be gone for two hours or a little more.

I'll post pictures and let you know how things went.
  • Put up the do not disturb on your door. I had a woman walk in with Koda crated and he scared the sh*t out of her. I'm sure he was pretty frightened too to have put on such a show.

I was the woman to watch out for with "that wild dog". *sigh* and a little *he he he* cause Koda is such a pansy.
  • Agreed, put the DND sign on the door. I left it off one day and I came back to find the room cleaned and evidence they had fed my dogs. Luckily it was Lucy's kibble so no harm was done, but I was PISSED.
  • They fed your dog? That sounds weird!
  • People do that kind've stuff though. My girlfriend said there was a cleaning woman taunting her Boxer in a motel in Lake Tahoe when she walked in. The woman was poking her fingers into the crate. WTF that's a good way to get bit by a dog.

I take my dogs to hotels/motels, but I always make sure no one goes in the room. I think I assumed they didn't if you checked in with a dog. But now, I'm totally down with the do not disturb.
