Threads of note

edited August 2010 in General
So the thread where we were discussing Brad's recent announcement gave birth to an idea that we could somehow sticky or organize some of the older informative threads on the forum. I was hoping that anyone that could think of threads that for any reason should be made more visible would post their nominations in this thread.

####################Re-posting Brad's comment here

Well, maybe we can use this thread to list dome of the threads we think should become more prominent...

I was thinking the socialization thread, and Shigeru's exporting thread, and maybe one of the books-you-should-read threads?

Any other suggestions?

How about you newer members, were there any threads you found very helpful when you first joined?

Also, maybe we should have a "new member thread" that helps to introduce the forum to new members and requests that they make an intro?

I thought maybe the thread about NK rescue organizations might be useful. Guess it could be expanded a bit too.

Also maybe some of the threads with lists of NK breeders.
  • A books-you-should-read-thread is a great idea.

A breeders sticky would cut down a lot of repeat questions/small threads. But then should we put up a disclaimer and would that be considering endorsing? If we did a breeder thread we could also post something about the breed along with the contact info. I suppose we could just list the breeders associated with the national clubs.

  • One of the threads about common health issues in NK

That thread on what makes NK not for everyone, loved it.

Perhaps how to choose a breeder/what are you looking for in a breeder?

Maybe it would be a good idea to create a new section to put all this info - smth like 'First time NK owner'

  • When I first actually joined rather than stalked around was when I was finally getting Koda, deposit was down, and confirmation that his parents bred successfully was in. I think this is when a lot of people actually begin active participation.

I really like the book thread. I also would like to see a How to prepare for your puppy or How to cope with your puppy when they get home.

I found so much info. on what to have, how to prepare, and what to get Koda. I really think it's because of all the forum's suggestions that Koda is so well behaved in the home. I was so nervous about having a puppy again. You all saved my sanity, and Koda never ruined anything in the house.
  • Thanks all. Tomorrow I will work on making a separate section to hold these threads.
  • Maybe a what to feed your dog thread too....Or maybe just merge the raw feeding threads so there is one raw feeding thread?
  • As a new member, I would say the threads that I would wanted/looked up were:

    Books you should read
NK Temperaments (I knew very little about their differences, this gave me a good load of information)

There were plenty of other things I looked at too; new puppy information, pictures of the different coats for each breed and so on.
  • I think that one on integration of a new dog into a household would be useful (for both forums).
  • Ok, I added an area at the top for recommended threads, do not know all the threads mentioned here... can anyone provide URLs for some of these?

Also, I think it would be nice to aggregate these threads in to a few "parent" threads. We could create some parent threads with general names like...

    - New to The Forum
    - New to Nihon Ken
    - Behaviors & Training
    - Health & Nutrition
    - Acquiring a Nihon Ken

Then we could list the recommended threads in their respective "parent" thread.

    What do you think?

    ----
  • I think the parent thread idea is awesome.
  • Parent threads do sound like a good idea, will prevent the main page from getting too cluttered, and those sound like pretty good key categories.
For the 'New to NK' (or whatever that section might be), I think the thread 'Nihon Ken Breed Differences' is pretty great (http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/4671). That's the one I meant when I mentioned temperament comparisons before. Forgot that there was one actually called that as well :S

Specifically, I felt Brad's epic post rating different attributes on a scale of 0-5 (and the subsequent discussion) gave me a load of information about some basic differences between the breeds.

Not sure what other people feel obviously, but I thought that was a great thread, particularly for getting introductory information.
