Lap Jumping

edited August 2010 in Kai Ken (甲斐犬)
Hadn't posted a video on Youtube in a while, so took a short one of Haru and I playing around. She's in play mode here as she and Baron just got finished playing tug-o-war. Lots of licking. I'm glad I'm not allergic to dog saliva.

  • Awwww! What a sweetheart. :-)

I'm impressed with her energetic and prompt responses to your commands. Tyson is definitely a bit more on the Shiba side when it comes to listening. lol.
  • Haru looks so petite in the video. I'd forgotten that Kai are more small-medium in size.

Wonder if the Shibas corrupted Tyson? :-) Or is it a boy dog thing?
  • Just realized watching this that I'm getting frighteningly thin this summer haha.
  • That was adorable! :)

My two will kiss on command and will jump up beside me on the furniture... But in my lap... Not a chance!

  • Super cute! Loved hearing the commands in Japanese too lol

    "Matte!" ~
  • Damn, where can I get me one of those?? LOL, sweet, Shigs

Would you say that this is all 100% kai or she just adores you and that's why she's 'executing' so well?
  • @white bear I don't know. I've only owned 1 Kai, but I can say I haven't really put that much effort into obedience training. If I did I'm sure Haru would be amazing. She picks it up so fast, with so much drive to do more. I know a lot of Kai that are much more trained than Haru is, SAR dogs etc. From my personal experience I'd say the Kai are the most easily trainable of the NK (as far as traditional obedience). I've seen some pretty well trained Shikoku too though (like Edgewood's Kuma). Of course over here most NK owners are not the type of people that do obedience with their dogs.

About Haru... well I know she is very attached to me, and very focused on me, constantly. My observation though is that it's not necessarily because she adores me. Different things make me think it's more because of her temperament.

She's naturally wary, and as a pup didn't like her body to be touched. She's startled easily, and is on the sensitive side. As a pup I worked to 'train' her out of her negative reactions, got her used to being pet, increased her thresh hold toward noises/strangers/new experiences and inanimate objects. I think because of this, while her reactions to things have changed, inside she's still bothered by them. Hence when she's up in my lap, which she likes, she's still a bit nervous about being so close, and knowing that she's most likely going to be touched. You can see that while it looks like she's just excited to be in my lap, there's a lot of tension in her body.

In the same way, when she sees or experiences things that would naturally bother her, she knows she's not supposed to react by barking etc, so looks to see where I'm at since I'm her security blanket. When she experiences something that causes her discomfort, she's learned that I can fix it, or distract/redirect her (which in her mind is making it go away). She seems to enjoy commands and being told what to do, as then she doesn't have to react to what's going on around her that she doesn't like.

I guess if I didn't think about the 'why' in everything she does I could accept it all as 'she loves me'. It is really a wonderful relationship, and it makes things so much easier when my dog looks to me to sort out trouble instead of reacting to it. But I have created a very human dependent dog. If she's not around people, and especially me, she gets stressed. I can imagine though that if I hadn't trained her like this, she would probably be a shy/wary/barky dog like I see often in Kai females. Owning her has really been a good experience in seeing how raising a dog in different environments can really change how they react to things. I guess it's the whole nature vs. nurture thing in action.

Anyway, I'm not sure my observations are completely correct, but this is what I've picked up as her owner.
  • I will add though that the fact that she was trainable enough to work through this is great. She makes an amazing companion. The best I've owned to date.

    Here's some videos of Kai/Shikoku

  • Loved the video of Haru... Josephine is a licker, too! While she is very trainable, I think (we don't work on it much, I'm afraid) I have personnally been working at the "no-lick" command since the day we found her (more than 3 years now). She still loves to lick any human being who will let her, though, and even me sometimes when she can get it in before correction! Here latest favorite thing is to lick my almost one year old grand-babies feet while they are dangling in air when someone holds her! Baby pulls her feet back and laughs! I don't think my training can be too successful with rewards like that for her!

Thanks for sharing all the videos...
  • Sage is a kissing machine. Sometimes it is pure greeting joy, sometimes I am sure it is grooming/healing, but I also think that a lot of his kissiness is appeasement. Especially to people who arenew to him.

Haru is wonderful. Thanks for posting, Shigeru, I love seeing her!
  • By the way, is Suguri SAR Kai?
