Saw my first JA today

edited October 2010 in General
Well I was walking Sevuk at my grandparents house and saw a dog tied out of my neighbor's house. At first it looked like a KBD from far away but as I got closer it was clearly an Akita. A very pretty, dark brindle boy. The owner was outside gardening and so I asked if I could see him. I asked a bunch of questions and she was really nice about it all. Turns out, they are moving into our neighborhood in a couple weeks. He's actually a JA akita that my neighbor got from her boss because they couldn't keep him anymore. He's a very sweet dog and recently I've actually been getting more interested in JA (even though a while ago I said I wouldn't own one, once again eating my own words). It was actually really exciting :) It almost felt like meeting a celebrity. I didn't get a picture though, but he was a very good looking akita. I'll probably be seeing more of him soon anyway :)

  • That is really cool. I'm still trying to run into a Kishu that supposedly lives ten minutes from me to no avail. I have one JA that goes to my vet, and they always get excited to see Koda. Really sweet people. I kinda' stalk other NK.
  • Haha, Tara, me too :) But I guess that's kind of a trade mark of NK owners...
  • I would LOVE to meet a kishu. I just might come stalk up in the bay area with you Tara.

The same thing happened when I made a friend in one of my classes and then I found out their family has a shiba. I was like "I HAVE TO MEET YOUR DOG." oh...first encounters haha
  • Ha ha ha. I love Shibas. There's a new Shiba at the dog park named Shasta. She is awesome! I totally bug her owner. I have even taught Shasta to come to me whenever I call. She has perfect recall to me.
  • You're so lucky that you at least can meet other NK in dog parks your area. They are not so commomly seen in the everyday life here. My old roomie has a karelian beardog, which are not so common either, and one day we totally stopped traffic in the city. A man simply stopped the car in the middle of the road to stick his head out the window and ask about the dog! XD
  • hahahaha. Some people complain they can never get their shibas to come when called and you've already got this one trained.

Apparently neighbors have told me there are a lot of shibas in the area I live in, but I have yet to run into one. I've only seen two other shibas and that was just when we were driving around the city.

Oh, about the man stopping in the street, the same thing happened with my neighbor's two Caucasian ovcharka. He was walking them and a car stopped traffic (its a one way street) just to ask about the dogs' breed.
