scary morning

edited October 2010 in General
So today started out like all my other days off. Got up, let the dogs out and then sat down to read email. I had walked into the kitchen a couple times and saw the dogs playing in the yard so I was not worried about anything. A little later Fuu and Foxey came to the door and wanted in. I let them in and then stuck my head out the door to yell for Tora and Kuma. That is when I saw the gate standing wide open. I immediately ran to the front door as that is normally where they go. No dogs there. I started my frantic search. Neither dog is wearing a collar as I do not want it to damage their show coats. I was worried about the road, while it is not heavily traveled, people do fly up and down it. When I got to the end of the driveway, I started walking down the middle of the road. Anyone driving along there was going to have to slow down. Just then off in the field across the road from us, I happen to see a black dog running and then a red dog. I give a call for Tora and she stops instantly. I call again and she comes flying straight to me with Kuma hot on her tail. I tell them to get to the house and they run to the front door and wait for me, both with their tongues hanging out the side of their mouths. The gate now has 3 chains on it.

  • OMG! Glad everyone was safe! What a scary ordeal!!! ~
  • So much like her brother! I'm so glad that she's safe and back at home. My heart would've stopped, oh yeah Koda has done that to me. At least she has good recall. :-)
  • OMG what a scary experience. I'm so glad everyone is okay!
Thank god for good recall, huh? ;)
  • yeah, I was very thankful she has such good recall. If any of the dogs had to get out, those 2 were the best 2. I can count on them coming when called 100% of the time.
  • Oh wow... That WAS scary...

Glad they are all back home safe and sound.

I always check my gates before I let the dogs out... But, it is probably not a bad idea to lock the back gate. I may have to look into getting a lock for it.
  • Yikes! I could feel a lump in my throat while reading that.

I'm so glad it all turned out well.
  • Wow I'm so glad you were able to get them back. =)
  • Casey Kais are pretty well known for opening gates. Koda and Maymay both do it, so all gates are locked now. Tora may have just opened it to let her and Fuu get a run in.

There's a guy in LA who has two Kais. He actually has chains on the outside of his front door because no matter what lock they put on they seem to get out. Can you imagine chaining the outside of your front door. I'm surprised no one has called the cops to check him out.
  • Carabiner clips are pretty good for locking gates, if you don't really want to fight w/ a lock.
  • Glad everyone was ok!

The carabiner clip is a good idea too. I have a chain that has a clip on it on my front gate and the side gate is padlocked. None of my dogs have tried to get out, but it's also to keep people from opening the gate.
  • So glad they were happy to come home. Yeah it only takes once to reinforce gate opening behavior. We are on full lock down here and it is akin to fort knox (LOL). Awesome your dogs have such good recall!!

    Snf
  • I don't think Tora opened the gate. The chain that was on there is very hard to get off. I found out the electric company had been messing around the place, and I think one of those guys left it unlocked. They know they are not suppose to enter the back yard unless we are present and advise them it is ok.
  • Oh....that is really frustrating. I have a problem with the electric company myself. In the past, they've been good, but then we got new people. I've told them they can come in when the Shibas are out if I"m there, but the last guy came in before I got to the gate. Bel is terrified, which shows as aggression, and the more she barks, the more he gets threatening in body language, which makes her worse. But what is even worse is that he walks in with Oskar, my AA pup. Right now, Oskar just barked, but was highly suspicious, (though easily distracted by a stick!). But I told him he can't just come in (and I've also told him how his body language makes Bel more, not less, nervous)....I have no doubt that when Oskar is bigger, he will be WAY less tolerant of this....He already spent a lot of time getting in between me and the guy....

It makes me crazy, because I've told them the dogs are only out if I'm home, so they should honk the horn, and I'll come out and let them in. But they really don't listen.
  • Oops I shouldn't have assumed it was Tora. Koda was taught how by Maymay. Little stinkers drive me nuts. Tora's more well behaved than her brother and his sidekick the Mayniac.
  • Yes, I have told them before they should not enter the back yard unless someone is home and they talk to one of us. The dogs are normally not out while we are gone, but sometimes there may be one in the yard if we run out real quick. Worst part was I was home, just did not hear anyone outside. Also the dogs did not give their warning bark. Needless to say, I informed the lady at the other end of the line again to mark it on our file. I think is was some new guys working in the area. We even had them install the remote meter so they would not have to enter the yard to read the meter anymore.
