Should I be worried?

edited December 2010 in General
I went on a duck hunt today in pouring rain and gale force winds....(yeah I know I'm crazy). Well after hauling out 24 goose decoys, 30 duck decoys, and a wet lab (hana), I ended up with one duck!. so to make a long story short, on my way out I stopped and chatted with another hunter about how horrible the hunting was. I get back to my spread and find out that Hana devoured my only duck of the day.

Now she ate 3/4 of the duck, bones and all. She's not acting funny or any thing and seems like her happy dumb self. I have always heard not to give bird bones to dogs. Should I be concerned with any issues that may happen in a few days? I'm going hunting again tomorrow and an wondering if I should leave her at the house but seriously she is acting normal and eating/drinking normally.

Thanks for any imput, this is the first time ever that my poo for brains lab ate a raw bird.

  • Well raw chicken bones are fine, just cooked so im guessing that since it was raw its ok
  • I would worry about your poo for brains lab if she ate a decoy.
  • lol! that is funny, but yeah I agree with Rina, uncooked bones are no problem.
  • We used to feed RAW duck (with bones) to our dogs and they were fine. I wouldn't worry. RAW bones are soft, its the dry cooked bones that are dangerous.
  • It's good for dogs actually as everyone else has noted....raw bones are fine. (Raw chicken, bones and all, is the basis of my dogs' diet).

But gotta say, that sucks! I bet you weren't planning on feeding the duck to the dog!
  • I have fed raw chicken to my foster akita without problems, it's only when the bird has been cooked. That makes the bones kinda crisp-ish and they can shatter into sharp pieces, and THAT is dangerous...
  • Thanks every one, yeah wasn't planning on feeding an entire duck to my dog but oh well she did most of the work by jumping in that cold ass water to retrieve the damn thing. But I think I know what I'm going to do with the left over body of the duck after I breast them.

Well on my way out for round 2 of the crap weather duck hunt, its actually the best time to duck hunt.
  • Took two ducks today myself. Wish I had a retriever. I ended up stripping and swimming for the last one.
  • Maybe she'll get some soft poop, but I suspect that she'll be fine.
  • I was going to say the same--she'll probably end up with the runs.
    Shigeru, that's funny.
  • Yeah, feeding a raw duck to my dog is something I'd do on purpose. :o)

  • That's funny Gen,
Everytime I look at the weather right now, I think the same thing. Must be all the years of living up in Alaska. Rainy weather = good fishing weather.
  • Thanks for all the reassurance. I ended up limiting out today with 7 ducks and a fat goose. I wing shot a duck that gave Hana a run for her money but after a 100 yard chase and having to dive a few times she came up from underneath with a nice Pintail drake (I'm going to have it mounted).

No runny poop yet. Shigeru you gotta come out here man, I had wigeon and Gadwalls dive bombing into my spread. It was the coolest thing on earth to see, right when I though the ducks were too high, they did a high speed dive right in front of me. Nice thing is that Hana kept busy for most of the day and she even helped me pick up all the decoys!

  • I'm glad Hana is OK Hope she doesn't develop a knack for eating the ducks.. lol

  • Gen, I may actually make it out there to see you guys. That would be seriously awesome as I'm really looking forward to seeing Taro and Koyuki again.
  • Sweet Shigeru, well you just let me know when you can (hopefully its during our hunting season). I got a place where you can crash and I'll get you lined up with some good hunting opportunity. Next big season isturkey season which starts on the last weekend of march.
