Insect stings.

edited January 2011 in General
Today I decided to stay home from hunting and do much needed yard work and give all the dogs a good bath (80 degrees today). After I get all dogs washed and cleaned I take a quick siesta with a brewski. I look out side and see that Koyuki's left upper lip is so swollen that I can see her teeth!

I jump up and check it out. There was an area where it seemed that she was stung by some thing. I check her ou to see i there is any thing wrong with her and she checked out fine. I take her BP's to see if she's having any major reactions bt completely normal and she wants to play hard. So I take some Benedryl and wrap it in cheese and see if it helps. The swelling came down a good amount an when she fell asleep I checked her mouth to see if I can find a stinger but notta.

Soooooo after making fun of her a bit for looking like a Kishu duck, she seems t be doing fine.

Any one else had to deal with insect stings? Whats your guy's remedies?

  • Cold pack and benadryl. I have injectable benadryl that I keep in a first aid kit for when I travel with the dogs. It's very highly concentrated tho, so unless the dog was dying from a sting, I give the oral benadryl first.
  • I do the same, cold pack and benadryl. It usually clears it up with no major problem. I've never had a dog that was allergic to bites/stings thankfully.
  • Same as the others said. First day I had Conker he got stung and that's what the vet said to do.
80 degrees? I am jealous... but 90 sounds better in my opinion XP
  • First off... 80 degrees? The high here today is 18. GRRRRR!

Secondly, usually just benedryl here. If the swelling is really bad, I will use a cold pack, but normally the pups will not sit still long enough for that to be effective. But then again, Nola is the only one that has ever gotten stung and she is a wiggle worm.

Glad Koyuki is doing fine, though! That will teach her to try and eat the bees! (or not... Nola gets stung a couple of times a year because she thinks bees are just so tasty looking!)
  • Yeah 80 freak'n degrees here. I hate this heat and wish the cold weather would come back. My kids went swimming in a outdoor pool yesterday and they said the water was no where near bing too cold.

I have a good stash of benedryl and I use the 1mg per pound calculation. I have never been able to use a cold pack on a dog, they just dont want to sit still long enough for it to work. This is actually my first time having to deal with a bee sting flare up on any of my dogs. As of this morning she is fine and back to her usual self.
  • Gen I hate you, I want 80F weather:P

It's nice and sunny here and the highs are 15...I would kill to have some heat
  • Heh, come to Finland :D. It has been snowing all day (I really start to hate snow) and it seems that we are "enjoying" from cold weather on the weekend
  • What's this 80 degree weather you guys are talking about? Everyone knows it's a myth.
  • Its 76 in my garage right now, its hard to get into the hunting mood when its hot...
  • It's 75 degrees here in Oakland where I'm dying to get out of the office.

Rina it isn't warm where you live? It's so nice here.

Glad Yuki is doing fine today. Bee stings suck.....
  • Come on out here, it is 6F. Supposed to get all the way up to 12F
  • It's 54 here lol.
  • 54 sounds excellent! I dunno about 6F, thats flipp'n cold, well last time I was in single digits was a N.Dakota duck/goose hunt like 6 years ago. It was soo cold that my gun malfuntioned from freezing water.
  • we are in single digits here as well. dogs go to play for 20 minutes then come in to thaw out. After that the process starts again.
