I think this might be interesting for some of you, in the book Dog by Kazuya Takaoka its written "Kawakami-ken: A type of Shinshu Shiba, one of the Shinshu varieties of the Shiba Inu. In fact the present-day Shiba Inu was bred from Kawakami-ken from in and around Nagano Prefecture"

Another is because the archaic reading for the kanji 'shiba' means small. .
.

Shiba rhymes with chibi, which means small. Doesn't have to do w/ the kanji which means wood.

@rikumom - does that still hold true for the kanji in classical Japanese? I assumed that's what Shigeru (@thewalrus) meant in his original post.

I loved that website...it was fun to read about the Shibas flushing pheasant. also made me laugh to see that Shibas hunting in groups didn't seem to work well, and that sometimes he had to leave the Shiba and come and get her later. Typical Shiba!
