Greek names for NK?

edited February 2011 in General
I understand Heracles/Hercules would be a good name for Tosas. However, if one like me was wanting to give the "real" NK a Greek mythology name, in your opinion, what would be an appropriate name for each of these beautiful dogs?

Due to the loyalty they have (well, practically domestic dog breed has a certain level of strong loyalty), I would name my future Akita Argos (one of several characters named). Being a Hachiko (a name I also will use) figure, he waited 20 years for Odysseos (I use the mainstream literal Greek translations to stay true to the spelling).

Of course, the Hellenikos Poimenikos/Greek Shepherd Dog (a direct descendants of the original Molosser dogs) would be more apt with Greek names. The Molosser tis Epirou, the modern version of the Molosser, is closely related to this pooch. In fact, even with the knowledge I have gotten from sites about them, I don't know if they constitute separate breeds. Similar to how the Belgian Shepherd is very similar to the German and the Tervuren, Laekenois, and Malinois.

  • I see Athena as a good fit for a Shikoku or Kai.
    Apollo for a Kishu.

No particular reason behind those, I just think they are neat names.
  • Losech said, "No particular reason behind those, I just think they are neat names."

I believe that's how I had the question intended. Incorporating whether or not said name would be appropriate for the dog's existence was also included. Similarly, our black Lab is named Thor. I see that more of a name for a larger dog like a Dane or Mastiff.
  • I see Adonis on a male shikoku.
  • Though I think it odd to assign a Greek name to a Japanese dog, I'll admit that some of the Greek monster names sound cool. Kraken for one.
  • Meh, I still think it's weird that non-Japanese people give Japanese names to their dogs. In the end, it's their dog so IDGAF :P
  • Kraken isn't Greek but I acknowledge it does seem weird, but hey, celebrities have a trend of giving their kids weird and downright horrible names.
  • @okiron lol. Koda is named after Brother Bear because my niece thought I had bought a bear cub when I showed her his picture. Mei well she has a Chinese name. (Although I didn't name her.) Neither of my dogs have Japanese names.

If I had to give Mei Mei a Greek Goddess name it would be Artemis, Goddess of the hunt and wild animals. It's fitting for her.

Koda would be Lelantos because he stalks his prey skillfully or Prometheus because of his old soul and intelligence.
  • Haha Tara, I think of Brother Bear whenever I read about Koda.
  • I don't think giving Japanese names to NK is any weirder than Japanese people giving English names to their pets. In the end I think one should just name their pets whatever they think sounds good/fits. Heck, I have two rats named after types of sausage.
  • And I think Japanese people giving English names to their pets is weird too.

Don't take it to heart Kyla. You've been a part of NKF for 2 years now, you should somehow get my sense of humor lol. Make fun of the fact that I have a cat named after a serial killer if you'd like.

I take it back about mixing dog breed origin and language names up. There are far worse names I've seen that stay within the same breed origin/language. Stuff like naming dogs after food dishes, fart, etc.

I'd rather see multi-language names that are more respectful towards the dog.
  • Names such as "Muffin", "Pumpkin" and "Cupcake", LOL. I think Greek names would be awesome. My Shikoku all came with their names so I just kept them. I like making up Old English/Medieval sounding names for my Malinois =]. I also have some Japanese-ish names that I made up and will probably use for future Shikoku I actually get to name. I have other names I "stole" off from those baby names and meaning websites for future animals. As well as other names I made up but not sure how to catergorize...
  • Psh my chihuahua/dachshund Bacon will eat you! Not really...he's a pretty great dog considering I did nothing to socialize him and got him at 4 weeks old.
  • Haha, I wasn't really taking your comment seriously, Rina. And I've always loved Dahmer's name.

I just name my pets after whatever I feel like. My cat is named Tiramisu.
  • @ShikokuSpirit - Corina, one of Nola's nicknames is 'fuzzy pumpkin'... :-P

Slightly off topic, because it is not Greek, but if I ever have a male dog that is quite stoic, I am going to name him Woodrow.
  • Woodrow, huh? Would you also be naming after the Woodrow Wilson?
  • Oh yes... Definitely after Woodrow Wilson. :)
