Nippo Classic 2011 Anyone coming?

edited March 2011 in General
The dates for this years Nippo classic have been secured. The dates are May 13-14. So far I have been told they are planning to have it in Toledo again. Once I find out for sure I will post the location. It will be open to all Japanese dogs again this year. Hope to see a bunch of you there!

  • Whyyyy do I live in Denmark? *sigh* I'll have to make do, with loads of pictures and stories *hint hint* ;P
  • Sweet. I need to start searching for a cheap flight.
  • If only I could afford to come...Maybe next year
  • Wohoo, only a two hour drive!
  • Question: at these NIPPO shows in the US do the judges only judge the dog while standing (like in Japan) or do they ask to see the dog in motion too?
  • @brada1878 You may want to ask Peggy about her experience showing Aki and Yamato last year, she may give some good insight from her experience there.
  • They do move the dogs around the ring to see their movement. They typically have you do a small triangle. Most of it though is standing in the ring with the dog.

@sjp051993 Toledo kinda' sucks to fly into. lol.

@brada1878 Here's Peggy (?) in the ring last year.

And here is Player. I think he got bored.
  • It might be cheaper to fly into Columbus, Canton or Cleveland and rent a car. All 2 are larger airports so there are more choices in and out of there.
  • Aki is gorgeous!
  • The info has been updated. here is the website.

  • Awesome it is in same place this year.... this means I might get to go. Yeah!!!
My grandkids, Joseph and Summer showed the dogs last year. Joseph liked it better than regular conformation shows, because he did not have to stack the dogs :)
I would make sure they are comfortable with being Wicketed.. they measure all the dogs before they enter the ring. My dogs did not care for this procedure.
  • Same place as last year.
  • some pictures from last year.. hope this works.. check out Peggy and her Shikoku and Joseph and Maddie : )

  • OK, I am helping with the awards for this years Nippo Classic. Trying to get an idea ahead of time how many kai, Skikoku, and Japanese Akita are coming. Anyone know if they are going to attend this year?
  • I'd love to go to see it, but sadly can't maybe next year. =\

  • I think I'm going to try since Toledo isn't too far from me. (Assuming that Bear's breeder is interested, that is).
  • So, I discussed this with Jen, she thinks I should go... So, as of now, I plan to bring Kaiju (Shikoku Ken), Haru (Kai Ken), and Nio, Akashi, or Ritsu (Kai Ken).

    ----
  • I believe I'm going to be stuck in California dog and house sitting for a friend that weekend =/.
  • @brada1878 can you show your KKA registered Kai at the Nippo Classics?
  • I have no idea as I don't really plan to show them. Just taking them so people can meet them.
  • You can get a NIPPO limited registration for KKA and be able to show (and breed) for NIPPO... But I have no plans to do that.
  • @brada1878 Not bringing Cho Cho?

Damn, I really wish I could go...Maybe, I can talk Tom into letting us go

Unlike Beikoku, you don't need NIPPO registration in order to show at the NIPPO Classic.
  • You can show Nippo in the US without being Nippo registered. They just use whatever registration number you provide. In the case of Tora her UKC number. I can't wait to meet the group Brad. If you would like to show a couple of them, I would be more than happy to help you out.
  • Oh, ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

@Calia - Probably not gonna take Cho Cho due to how carsick she gets. I can only deal with one car sick dog at a time and Kaiju will be that dog. I want Kaiju to go because he may be used as stud by the Shikoku breeding community so I want him to be seen by at least one other breeder.

@sjp051993 - Ok, I might take you up on that offer. Thank you very much.

My concern is that, if a NIPPO judge will be there judging, I doubt my KKA Kai will do very well as KKA has a different standard than NIPPO. Like, for example, Kumi is a super nice Kai Ken and would probably show really well in KKA in Japan, but she would be way too small to show in NIPPO over there.

You have to remember that KKA and NIPPO split over the size difference (of the Kai Ken) and the bulk of the Kai Ken registration went to KKA and not NIPPO in Japan. So it's like a guarantee that a NIPPO judge will complain about seeing a small Kai Ken as that is the (original) dispute between KKA and NIPPO.

I know at the last Nippo Classic the NIPPO judge mentioned that Kai Ken were too small in Japan... which is an obvious stab at the KKA as they prefer a smaller Kai Ken (because, keep in mind, the Kai Ken was sized as a mid-point between the Shiba and the medium sized Nihon Ken, but when NIPPO wanted to standardize the breeds, and moved the Kai Ken standard closer to the medium sized dogs, which was bigger than the original Kai Ken (they were altering the original "standard" by doing so). That is why KKA exists now).

  • Having written that, Shigs got some positive feedback from NIPPO regarding Haru, so she may show well under a NIPPO judge, which is (one reason) why I am bringing her.

    ----
  • @brada1878, I think I remember you saying in a post in the past that Okabe-san or it might even have been Inoue-san's Kais are on the smaller end of the KKA standard, so yeah they probably wouldn't do very well in a NIPPO show if they are considered to be too small for the NIPPO standards. Hopefully Haru will show well though if you decide to show her! :]
  • @jujee - Yea, it was Okabe-san. His Kai tend to be smaller, and Kumi's sire is Okabe-san's Musashi. Haru, on the other hand, is from Inoue-san and is a bit larger. Haru and Ayu are a nice size. Kumi is super cute, but she is a little small for my tastes too, if I'm to be totally honest.

  • Koda's 55 pd. butt would do well in NIPPO. :-)

I'm considering coming, but I'm not sure if I will ship Koda with me. I just got a huge oral surgery bill. :-( I could buy a Prius with that one.
