Kurgo Quantum Leash

edited March 2011 in Products & DIY
I just received this leash in the mail today. I got it for jogging because the arm that holds the leash always gets sore. I haven't tried it out yet, but my initial impression is that it's definitely a really neat leash. It's very versatile in that you can do hands-free walking, either around the waist or courier style, it's easy to tether to things, and you can adjust the length from 3'-6', or you can use it as a two-dog leash.

This is going to make walking a lot more convenient for me, because if I'm not out jogging, I've got my three kids in tow. I'll have either a wagon or stroller, and kids that get in and out as they feel like it, often want to hold my hand, and we often stop at playgrounds where we stop and play, so it's nice to be able to switch easily between hands-free walking, or I can attach the leash to the wagon, tether Rakka at the playground and so on. I will also be able to tether Rakka in the back of the car more easily. I had been using a regular leash with a large clip on the handle I used to latch her in. This will be easier.

My only complaint is that the hardware is not the best quality. The leash itself seems pretty standard for a nylon leash in terms of strength of materials and craftsmanship, but the metal pieces aren't that great. I don't think it will be an issue for Rakka, but for a larger, more powerful dog, I would suggest finding a tougher leash.

  • I got to test this out at the vet today and it came in very handy! There was a moment where I had the leash in my hand and needed to buckle Naomi in the carseat, and then the general busyness of parading three little kids and a dog around an office. Very good for those of us whose hands are always full.
  • I also recommend the multi-purpose leash from Bridgeport Equipment (https://www.bridgeportequipment.com/ProductDetail.aspx?productId=123). Our Petsmart trainer uses it on his dog and recommended the website to me. It was pretty inexpensive so I decided to order the 3/4" leash to try out. The quality is really good. The leash is 100% premium thick, stitched leather and there are 3 different metal hook areas that are very sturdy. I've been using it on my Akita pup since he was about 30 lbs and he's 83 lbs now and the leash is still going strong.

Ooo nice. Cheaper than Ruff Wear's flat out leash too.
  • Not sure if this link will work, but I had a similar leash custom made that I've been ecstatic with. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.378586114043.160219.101977654043

My only complaint is that nobody besides me can figure out how to use/adjust them. lol.
  • Good to know the alternatives, because Rakka chewed through her quantum leash (of course). I've been looking into the flat-out leash to replace it, and I found it for pretty cheap at Altrec.
  • Not sure if I mentioned this or not, but you might want to check out the Marine Dog 8ft hands free leash:
    http://www.marinedog.com/cart/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=34&osCsid=fc029fbcddd9b0e8b2502e855f30e41a

It's made from marine rope, with brass clips and loops, and is totally salt water safe. I've been using it with my guys, and it's pretty strong. It can also be used as a coupler when combined with the healing leash (basically a handle with a hook) and works great.
  • One of our trainers uses this, I've been wanting to order one too: http://www.wonderwalkerbodyhalter.com/shop/products.php?product=Hipster©-Walking{47}Jogging-Belt-and-Leash

  • That link doesn't work, but is it this you're talking about?

I definitely need something like this jogging. Holding the leashes in my hands is becoming really annoying when I'm jogging.
  • I dunno about everyone else but I pretty much always wear a belt and either loop the leash through it or use a good carabiner clip (the locking kind) and attach the leash to my belt with that. But I guess for jogging you don't normally wear an actual belt so... those leashes do kinda make sense for that.
  • Yep, that's it
  • Heidi, if you are looking for a jogging belt for holding a leash, check out sites that sell Canicross supplies. For anyone who doesn't know, Canicross is basically having your dog pull you as you jog. It is one of many modifications to mushing, skijoring being another that has you hook a dog to a belt to pull. You may also want to look up urban mushing supplies. Even if you aren't going to have your dogs pull, using belts that are made for pulling could save your back if one of the pups happens to see something they want to chase.

@brada1879 - That looks pretty cool. Because of my history of breaking my back, I am a little wary of using waist belts for jogging with Bella... But the alpha pac looks like it might be okay. Although, it would probably be quite hot. :(

Other than the 'position of “Alpha” dog or pack leader keeping the dog/s right were they belong, by your side"... That is a little silly.
  • Yea, that is silly. It bothered me too... But the product is cool!
  • The big issue I see with the Alpha Pack is how it could screw with your center a gravity if the dog decides to chase something behind you or towards the side.
  • @Losech Noah does that belt thing a lot. I don't think I even own a belt, so I never do it obviously. I also think there's something off about undoing your belt in public (to put the leash on and off).

@Calia I've looked into that, and it's very interesting. Looks like nice stuff. Especially for two dogs, I find that it's best to keep them going in the same direction by having them attached together sled dog style. I like to get Rakka and Sosuke running shoulder to shoulder out in front of me as it simply feels the most natural and keeps us all untangled.

    @brada1878 That looks really neat.

P.S. I thought I posted this ages ago, but I just checked this thread today to get a link that was posted and saw that I had this reply saved. Oops.
  • that marine dog leash looks pretty good.
has anyone here tried it out?
