Kaiya's thread (SPAM)

edited April 2011 in Kai Ken (甲斐犬)
As many of you know, Kaiya and I have been battling issues with her legs the last month or so. We went to a wonderful orthopedic facility here in MD where they determined she has a strained left Achilles tendon and a bone lesion and possible tarsal ligament damage on the right hind.

All in all I am quite happy with the PT that has been prescribed and they are great with her. She is going in once a week for a combination of ultra sound therapy, magnetic field therapy, laser/LED therapy and manual therapy/massage. We also have a home exercise program to help strengthen her core and leg muscles. She wears braces on both legs when she is not confined/sleeping. She is doing pretty well and, once I got over feeling sorry for her with the braces, has provided us with a few laughs. As soon as I get a new camera, I will post pictures of her new favorite chewing position with her braces on. She has some trouble getting her rear end down to a full down position when she is in them.

Does anyone have any experience with Dasuquin w/MSM? We are trying not to medicate too much and this supplement does not have much information that I can find. It is being recommended as part of her therapy program. It seems to be similar to glucosamine/chondroitin but maybe with more chemicals. Any amount of information anyone has as all would be great.

Since I have bored you with all of our medical issues, I figured I should spam a little too. This is the last round of photos before the camera broke...

  • Glad she is doing well with her PT regiment. Hopefully she will continue to improve!

As for the supplement, I have never heard of it... Is there any reason why a regular glucosamine/chondroitin supplement would not work for her condition? Just curious.
  • I did not know until I got home with the paperwork and could look it up what it was. We did not purchase it. I am going to call the Dr. when I have a few minutes tomorrow to see if we could do glucosamine/chondritin instead. I just have a bad feeling about the Dasuquin, not sure why...

    >> We have supplemented a few of our dogs with Dasuquin w/MSM, seems to do it's job... But for severe cases (and I would consider Kaiya's case severe given her age), I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Velvet Elk Antler. http://www.elkantlers.com/birds_and_dogs.htm

We give it to Kaia and Ahi and it makes a huge difference. Our Ortho vet (that did Ahi's surgeries) recommended it to us.

  • Kaiya looks great, btw! She is very cute!

  • Kaiya is absolutely adorable! I sure hope you find a good solution, and she starts feeling better.
  • The bed pic is my favorite. I think that Kaiya has made me fall in love with her. She looks so happy. I'm so sorry that you've had to go through all this, and I want to say that you are amazing for supporting her and taking care of her so well.
  • Thank you all for both the support and kind words. She is the most amazing pup and I can hardly believe I spent so much of my life without her. We are getting through all of her issues and she still seems to be her normal self. Hopefully we can be back to all of our regular activities in the next few weeks.

@Brada1787 I will definitely ask about the Velvet Elk Antler. Thank you for the recommendation
  • So Kaiya was at the vet Friday because she went into season 3 weeks ago and has not stopped bleeding. Our vet is concerned she has a cyst on her uterus as she is in estrus and is still bleeding. After a consult with her cardiologist, we will be having her spayed as soon as possible. I hope this is it for my little one. I dont want her going through anything else. Will take some pics tomorrow afternoon to post with all this text! She is out playing basketball with her daddy now :)
  • jeez... that poor pup! She has had a hard run so far! Keep us posted on her, I hope the spay goes well. I know when Mochi went through that you could see how relieved she was after the spay.

  • Oh boy, it's one thing after another with her. :-( She sure hit the jackpot with you guys taking care of her. We're sending her and you good vibes.

Poor Kaiya. Sending you guys happy healing vibes. Hopefully all goes well with her spay and that this will be the last of her health problems.
  • Thanks for all the well wishes and good vibes!

@dlroberts she may have hit the jackpot with us, but we need to hit it to care for her :) I keep telling her its a good thing she's so cute and sweet...

Some pics from Sunday of the girl just relaxin and resting up from a busy weekend, as you can tell, she was less than thrilled with the Paparazzi (me) bothering her and disturbing her beauty sleep.

    Loungin'

    Sleepy girl!
  • Well, we went back to the vet this evening just to have a check up before her spay which WAS scheduled for Wednesday. Turns out my baby girl is just seemingly doing things in her own time as she has progressed to diestrus :) What this means for us is that she will not have to be spayed while in heat :) We are going to keep an eye on her for the next couple of weeks and let everything return to its original shape/size and go for a spay at the beginning of June.
  • LOL, figures. Sure seems like she's going to turn out a lot like my Lucy. If the vet says "she'll feel better in 3-5 days" it will end up taking her 7. Or if the vet says "we see some nausea in 2% of patients" you can bet your ass she'll be in that 2%. Oh, the joys of being owned by our high maintenance girls. :-)
  • High maintenance is an understatement :) The vet told her yesterday she should get a job, which I thought was pretty funny because I tell her that everytime there is something new going on.
Its a good thing our girls found loving familys who are willing to put up with their crazy health antics.
  • I have had great success with Dasquin and MSM for my dogs. The MSM is a natural anti inflammatory and we gave it for many years to our old BC after her acl tear when she was about 8. She lived to be 16.
  • The brand Dasuquin (w/MSM or w/out MSM) is a decent product and has some research backing it the reason the vets are so keen on it. Try it and see. It is good you are calling to ask though since there is a reason he wants the basic particular combo together with MSM.

In our case, we have had difficulty with use of Dasuquin on some dogs due to the compounded ingredients they put in to make it tasty and palatable. Dogs with digestive issues may find it difficulty on their system.

If your dog encounters bowel problems or throwing up, make a switch to a basic compound. Before you switch look at the ingredient formula ratio for Glucosamine and MSM on the DQ container. You should be able to get the core equivalent in a pill form and grind into a powder to sprinkle on some wet food, either watered kibble with a squirt of salmon, canned or raw. Any health food store should carry the basics with no additives in it. The very basic form does not have much flavor so really there should be no food aversion once mixed in. Even in the basic form it will take a little time for feeding adjustments for some animals though. Benefits of use usually do not show up right away.

If you are working with VOSM they are top notch and should get your dog back in order soon if you follow the pt. It is a long haul to healing though. The LED therapy is great in combo or in between. Be prepared to go back from time to time with LED if needed. Acupuncture is also an option down the road.

Understand that with any injury/sports injury, once it occurs one may get 99% recovery but there will be the 1% that will need to monitored/maintained. Damage to the frame so to speak does create side effects that can occasionally flair up or creep up over time. The stretching and ROM exercises should be for life to keep the body alignment correct, and muscles stretched and stable.

    Good luck.
    Snf

  • Sorry I'm so late to this. Life has been terribly busy. I'm glad to hear miss Kaiya is doing better. She has been through so much. I'm glad there's finally some good news.

BTW she looks a bit like Koda in those pics. <3 Awe!
  • I haven't heard any news on Kaiya lately.. what is the good word?
  • She is doing well. Her legs are slowly getting better and we are able to do hikes (with her braces on) and she is able to do short walks with out the braces. she still isnt allowed to run, which is nearly impossible to stop her from doing, but we are doing our best.

She will also be spayed tomorrow which will hopefully clear up some of her lethargy. This heat cycle really took a toll on her and she was still having little bouts of discharge as recently as 2 weeks ago, so we are eager for the spay.

We are hoping for a speedy recovery :)
  • Best wishes for her spay!
  • Well, the drama continues. Kaiya did not get spayed today. She of course wouldnt sit still long enough for pre surgery blood work and tried to bite the vet tech who was doing it. With her heart, I wouldnt allow her to be sedated without our doctor present (becuase she is the doctor in the practice I trust the most) and she wasnt there the day we went in, so we didnt get prep bloodwork until today. I know Im a little too over protective, I just cant help myself. Turns out my little girl was slightly anemic (32.5 instead of 37). All other levels platelettes, white cell, etc. were fine. She was also tested for all tickborne illnesses. We decided to hold off on the surgery to see if her iron was down from being in heat for so long. We want to make sure it doesnt get any worse (indicating some other issue) and hopefully improves over the next two weeks.

Luckily, we have switched to raw for feeding, and have been feeding beef the last couple of days, so we will continue with beef and go back to spay again on June 15.

If anyone has any other remedies to help her anemia, I welcome any suggestions. Thanks!
  • How's Kaiya, did she go in for her spay??? She is such a sweet girl...I hope everything is going good.
  • @kaikenone Thanks for asking about Kaiya. She is such a sweet girl (though we both may be a bit bias) Kaiya was spayed on Wednesday. She is finally over the anesthesia and is eating and playing as usual. Her iron count was back up to normal too :) Now we just have to wait a couple more weeks to get the stitches removed and she will be good as new :)
  • yes maybe we are :) I am so gald everything went well.....
  • Glad that Kaiya's spay went well and that she is recovery quickly. Hopefully things will start to look up for her (healthwise)! :)
  • Glad to hear that Kaiya's doing well and recovering quickly.

lol. Just read Casey's post. Well ditto!
  • Thanks all!

I forgot to mention that her right leg is completely healed and brace free all the time! She is at PT now for the left leg and we will be starting to scale that back soon hopefully. They think the remaining swelling is scar tissue.
  • YAY! That is excellent news! I am so happy and relieved for you guys. Now you can focus on really enjoying her. (not that you did not enjoy her to begin with, but I know how much medical issues can take up emotions and time.)
