really annoying...

The other day, I was out running errands and the pups were in the back of the car (the very back of our station wagon). When I came out of one place, there was a police officer waiting for me and he said someone had reported me for having dogs in the car without the window rolled down. Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but the danger of leaving dogs in cars is overheating, right? So why did someone complain on a day when there's snow on the ground? It was maybe a few degrees above freezing. It was a chilly day!

So the police officer told me that there's no problem, because it's not even remotely warm, and the dogs are clearly relaxed and comfortable, but he has to report that he talked to me. What a waste of time for me and the police.

I get that there's a danger of dogs overheating in certain weather, but when there's absolutely no danger of overheating, what's the problem? My dogs like going for car rides, and a lot of the time, I have them with me because I plan on going to the park when I'm done my errands. Actually, my biggest concern with taking my dogs places is that people are looking in at them, and maybe they'll get it in their head that they're going "rescue" the dogs or something.

I want tinted windows.

  • I got 'busted' at work by one of the maintenance guys for not having windows down. He was very proud of himself, and I guess its okay for him to care about dogs (since earlier he informed me that he knew "plenty' of akitas who were friendly as pups but got 'aggressive' at ten months...), but it was only in the 40s and my car was in the shade at that, just outside my window and I had just taken Juno out for a walk and lunch.
  • That's super lame, especially if it was cold out. I'm glad people care about dogs, but they need to use common sense before they waste people's times like that.

Eventually the pups will grow to be imposing enough to where people will not spend much time looking in your car anymore.

  • I'm glad I have tinted windows. I can't take the pups EVERYWHERE with me and sometimes they do get left out in the car.

But yeah, people need to have some common sense!!
  • Oh please. People annoy me.
  • Yeah, people piss me off.

I remember one time I went to the beach. I brought the dogs with me but got kicked out by the Beach Police because I guess dogs weren't allowed in that area (even inside tents). So I put them (Lynxiene & Shoushuu) in wire crates in the back of my truck with a cover over the top to provide shade. It was a warm day but not incredibly hot (temperatures weren't dangerous) and they had a nice breeze flowing through, plenty of ventilation. I went to go fill their buckets with water and when I came back...I found a note on my windshield.

The note basically said that it's not right of me to leave my poor dogs in the back of the truck like that and that they should have water. WTF? I was gone for 10 minutes to refill their water buckets! They had water beforehand too. I frequently went to check up on my dogs; gave them potty breaks and walks throughout the day as well. That really bothered me though, it's great that person had concern for my dogs but geez mind you own business! My dogs are fine.

I always make sure my dogs are properly cared for. I know most of the areas in which my dogs will be "safe" in the back of my truck. Certain areas that might be a problem, I make sure to leave a visible note with my phone number should they have any concerns.

It's also good to know city laws, for example in costa mesa I believe it is illegal to leave your dog inside the car unattended regardless. I'll have to double check current regulations. However, my old Aglity instructor got a ticket years ago because he left his dogs inside the car. It didn't matter that the AC was on and that the dogs were in no immediate danger.
  • Ugh I hate people. They are so obnoxious. I tend to not take Conker with me if I'm going to non-dog places simply because he's not a huge fan of my Jeep.

There are concerned people and just flat out stupid people and they are unfortunately on both sides.
There was one time where I stumbled upon a car with two small dogs and a BABY inside. It was over 110 degrees outside, the car was in the sun and the windows were down like, nil. I waited outside that car for a good 20 minutes feeding the poor dogs water before the "mother" came out. Boy did she get an earful from me.

In those situations I understand when people leave notes or yell at you but what you guys have said... Nope. I'd probably just stop by and say hello to the dogs then keep going.
  • Yeah, this kind of stuff makes me crazy. In Santa Fe it's illegal to leave your dog in the car, regardless of the temp. or if you have the windows down. I get being concerned for dogs, but if it's not too hot, what is the problem, exactly? I take my dogs for rides a lot, and they don't even necessarily get to get out of the car, they just get to "go" which they love (Bel, for example, loves to go for a ride, but hates getting out in an unfamiliar place).

And then I've seen the other side: like the time I was in the library and saw a poodle in a car with the windows all the way rolled up and it was 90 degrees, and the poor thing was panting like crazy....Ugh.

My vet told me that a story that one of their other clients passed on--the guy left his Akita puppy in his truck with the window partially down AT THE GAS STATION while he went in to use the restroom. I mean, how long could he have been gone, right? When he came back, a cop had broken the window of his truck to "rescue" his puppy. I'm not sure what the upshot of that whole mess was, but it was one very angry dog owner, that's for sure.
