Velvet Elk Antler

edited June 2011 in General
I've read about people giving dogs Velvet Elk Antler what website do you get it from?

I'm thinking of getting some for Saya.

  • The place we used to get it from closed, unfortunately. So we have not ordered any in awhile.
  • you could always try to draw a elk tag and hunt one during the velvet season. You get the best meat on earth and some velvet antlers!
  • No elk in IN!
  • I've thought of elk hunting. One step at a time, though, lol.
  • I entered the elk draw, so here goes nothing. When's the velvet season anyway?
  • usually late summer early fall and most of the time its a early archery season or some thing but it all depends on the state.
  • Well, it looks like I'm most likely to get drawn for late-season hunting, but I probably won't get drawn because I don't have any "priority points."
  • Right on. Congrats.
  • Hey its ok, just keep putting in for the draw every year and eventually you'll get picked. I been trying for some time now for arizona elk and I think maybe next year I'll get drawn.
  • Gen, are there no elk in CA?
  • There are but its really expensive even for a resident not much public land. Arizona is not too far from socal and there's more public areas to hunt and the cost is a bit lower. Oh and the elk are much bigger too!

True, but what I was asking about was a type of powder or pill supplement supposed to be good for joint health.

Elk meat would be yummy though and antlers too Bella and Saya loves deer antlers.
  • Interesting timing, I just got an email from gundogsupply.com advertising a "Shed-dog training kit" (http://www.gundogsupply.com/dokkens-shed-dog-kit.html?source=html-email&publish=1308100343).

It's all you need to train your dog to hunt for shed deer antlers. No licenses, firearms, or harvesting live game required!
  • There's tons of Elk here in Northern NM.
  • Yeah Brad are there good public areas near your place? Maybe I can just look for them out your back yard!

You could! I took this pic standing on one of the dog's platforms in the backyard a few years ago...

  • That is just awesome!!!
  • I admit to having never actually seen an elk. :o[ I'd have to drive a couple hours for an elk hunt. It would definitely require a pretty big trip.
  • Hey, Brad, how come you don't shoot elk?!
  • @dlroberts
Would you consider training that pointing lab for sheds? I think it'd be a fun activity for you in the off-season!
  • @hondru - Because I don't own a gun! :oP

    ----
  • Well gee, buy one!
  • Arizona is so full of elk, they are everywhere there! Every time I'd go camping we'd see elk, so many elk. I can understand wanting to go there instead of staying in Cali to get one.
  • @Kevin - Spilled the beans! I haven't "announced" Cassidy yet. :-) I'd consider training her a few years down the road. I don't want to confuse her bird training though, so her first few seasons will be birds only. After that, we'll see how she's doing and decide what's the best activity for us.
  • @dlroberts - we are in need of some Cassidy spam! And your signature now needs to be updated ;)
  • AAAH! Sorry!
  • @Kevin - no problem!

@jujee - no spam yet. Her litter is due next week. You'll just have to wait for August. :-)
  • How about some parent pics? :-)
