Coat blowing in the middle of the summer?

Anyone else have a Kai (or dog in general) that is blowing coat right now? Ty has been dropping hair left and right for the past week and a half. The Shibas have been done blowing coat for almost 2 months now. Weird right?

  • Ayu and Ritsu are too. Ayu looks silly and Ritsu is just starting.
  • Both Koda and Mei are. We have a couple hot days then it goes to sixty degrees. Their bodies just don't know what to do. It's like a slow and constant coat blowing. I miss last year when it was over by April. This year Mei blew coat in March then grew back her coat and then they started blowing coat in June, stopped, and now the rest is starting to come out. Meis looked like a mess.

    It all blows!
  • Sosuke doesn't seem to be shedding much at all. In fact, he hasn't done any significant shedding the entire time we've had him. His coat's pretty slick and thin compared to other double-coated dogs I've had. He just doesn't have the same amount of fluff. Rakka's shedding is being annoyingly persistent, though. Especially her butt. I can't believe the amount of fluff that comes off that butt!

It seems to me that there are some kai that are pretty fluffy and others that are more slick. I've never met Haru, but she looks pretty slick in pictures compared to, say, Ayu, who looks more on the fluffy side. Not like Shikoku, they all look fluffy.

Mika is shedding too. I was thinking "WTF ITS JULY!!" Brushed her the other day and my jeans had shiba fur stuck all over it. A lint roller didn't even save me!
  • Conker is on the last part of his. It's just now begun to slow down.
  • Well, let's see. Sukoshi has been blowing coat for about two months now. She has a really thick b/t Shiba coat. Most of the fur is now off of her main body. But she still is producing little tufts of fur on her neck and head. Yesterday she had a "reverse mohawk" down the middle of her head. I keep telling her that she should try out for an understudy for a "straw dog in the Wizard of Oz." When I took her into the vet about a week and a half ago, a couple who was waiting to find out about their poor mauled Chihauhau spent some time pulling tufts of Sukoshi fur off of her. I think they found it theraputic--and she very gently let them touch her and gave them kisses. Think she picked up on their emotional distress.

Hoshi just started blowing his coat in earnest about a week and a half ago. He looks kind of like a mangy fox with a sickle tail. I'm not going to let him pull any Shiba escape artist tricks for fear that he will be mistaken for a mangy fox!

Between the two dogs I have tufts of fur everywhere!
  • Ife blew her coat in July and also one of our Schipps did. Nuuk hasn't shed yet. When your Kai puppies shed for the first time after the puppy coat has changed? I don't remember anymore when Ife shed for the first time :o.
  • Just about everyone here is in some stage of blowing their coat right now... Living in MI with this weird weather we get all kinds of weird times when they blow coat.. I don't even know when is normal anymore ....
  • LOL. Ok. Good to know Ty isn't the only one. Thanks guys! :-)
  • Kaiya is too. @dlroberts I am glad you started this thread because I was starting to think I was the only one too. Weird thing with us is that it has been in the 80s/90s here since like May...
  • We are pretty sure Hilo rations his coat so we are ALWAYS dealing with shedding. We have just made peace with our grossness.
  • @hondru - Ayu just blew her puppy coat, so we'll see if she stays fluffy. She's looks horrible right now. I think most Kai have a slicker outer coat than the Shiba and Shikoku (and hokka, I think).

@JessicaRabbit - That's what happens when you're made of cotton candy and clouds. :o)

@hondru Koda didn't blow coat until he was almost 1. But it's still lighter than the Shikoku, or Mei do. His butt doesn't look all terrible when he does it. I know it's coming on because he gets dandruff! That bothers me more than his blowing coat. He looks horrid.

Mei blows coat like any Shikoku I've seen pictures of. Her butt has looked terrible for a month now! I'm not sure if it's her or environment that did it. Her first year of life was in an area that had snow vs. Koda being in California. But then again, I just think he has a more slick coat.

    @JessicaRabbit Awe! Hilo!!!!
  • Tikaani has been in major coat blow, our house is cover in white "tumbleweeds". I think mainly it is due to the fact that outside is so hot, yet inside the house we have the AC going. Everytime he plays with Miyu, she gets a mouth full of shed fur and gets covered by it.

    Lol Brad, so true:)
  • Ha! Brad, that cracked me up about Hilo.

Mine do seem to time it, too, so at least one is always blowing his/her coat. Toby seemed done in May, then Bel started, the Oskar started. Bel is done. Oskar seems stalled.....he lost a lot of hair on his haunches, but now has new patches shedding on his flanks. Toby started again.

    Neverending!
  • lol... Bella is just about done with her coat blow. Nola has been slowly letting go of hers for about 2 months now... She is probably about halfway done. I just wish it would all just come off in one giant fur explosion. Preferably outside. :)
  • My Cane Corso and Cocker Spaniel hardly shed, but the cats more than make up for that. Ramm used to shed constantly though. I miss having Shepherds.
  • Koyuki was shedding like crazy but taro and riki did all their shedding at the end of may-ish. I first thought maybe koyuki had a reaction to some thing cause she lost so much hair. Its funny how all three kishus have completely different hair styles. Riki has more plush coat where the shedding balls up, taro had bristly hair where it just falls out in piles, and koyuki has almost a wirely style coat and her sheds are soft light fluffs.
  • Ugh, Bea has been blowing her coat for the past two weeks. There is hair EVERYWHERE!!! Does anyone have suggestions for foods/shampoo/tricks that will make them finish blowing their coat faster?
