Ma namez Diesel, Ima burd dawg

edited August 2011 in Other Breeds
Well, I did it. I pulled the trigger. Took the plunge. Jumped in head first.

I bought a bird dog. A lab as a matter of fact. A pointing lab.

Candice and I rented a travel trailer, and we drove out to Colorado to pick up the little squirt. It was a great vacation. We got to see some friends (most notably Brad and Jen!). We got to do some hiking. Ate some nice meals. Relaxed. Unplugged. And generally got ourselves ready for the onslaught of raising a puppy. Boy was it a good thing, because this little dude is a MONSTER! lol.

We had originally picked out the name Leroy. But somehow it didn't suit him. The first half of the trip, I kept joking with Candice that I needed to trade in my truck for a diesel to make towing easier. I then proceeded to point out every diesel-powered 3/4 and 1 ton pickups on the road. While driving back from the breeder with the pup, I pointed out a diesel pickup, and Candice said "we should call him Diesel!" So I asked his opinion. He responded immediately! So we named him Diesel. Thirty minutes later, we stopped for him to have a potty break, and he was responding to his name already:

At 8 weeks old, he is already a water-loving retrieving machine! (it's a video, click on it)

He's getting along with Tyson amazingly well. If anything, Tyson is a little too tolerant of his antics so he's learning some bad play habits already. Lucy is the typical, calm, princess, that she is. Doesn't care for him, and he pays little attention to her. Joey and him have had a few bumps in the road, but they're working things out slowly.

I had my pick of 5 males, and let me tell you, it was tough. First and foremost, I was looking for confidence. Then I was looking for interest in me and Candice. I definitely succeeded. He is crazy confident. He'll go right up to anybody or anything. Noises interest him, they don't scare him. Same with objects. He's already a handful at just 9 week so of age. But, he's going to be one hell of a bird dog!

  • Sweet! Damn now your gonna have to also learn to duck hunt. Congrats Dave, I am sure you are going to have a fun season this year getting that little pup out in the field with you.
  • Congrats, and it sounds like a great trip! I love his name! (And your title on this thread cracked me up; when we're making up a "voice" for Oskar, it sounds much like that. I love him, but he's not as quick as the Shibas, you know? So I imagine him talking like that!)
  • I would first like to point out that you have puppy talk in your title. That's too cute!!!

That last video of him is sweet!!!! What a good little retriever. He's going to be one great hunting companion. Congratulations!!!
  • The inspiration for this thread's title (Candice says this to Diesel all the time):

  • What an awesome little guy! :) You are definitely going to have tons of fun with him! Congrats!
  • Aww! He is a cutie!

And it really sounds like he is going to be an awesome hunting companion. Even if he is a little bit of a handful. :)
  • ok now the thread is even cuter....
  • It's about time you introduced Diesel to the forum:) He is just too cute for words, and that video of him retrieving in the water is just too funny.
  • So cute! Good luck with him. I like the name Diesel.
  • I can't believe he's already water retrieving! I'm excited for you.
  • Congrats on the cutie! :D
  • Congrats on the new pup! My Border Collie/Labrador Retriever mixes also took to water right off that bat, but only one of them fetches.
  • Congrats! Diesel is ADORABLE, though I guess of he's as much of a monster as you claim (which I cant believe, I mean look he's passed out in that first pic :)) then his cuteness is much needed!

Can't wait to read about your hunting expeditions!
  • Congratulations! Diesel is a cute little guy.
  • He is so cute! Congrats.
  • Diesel is super cute. :o) Congrats again, Dave!
  • Aww, he's so rolie polie. Cute!
  • Congrats :)!
  • Puppies. Everyone's kryptonite!

I like Diesel's first retrieve! So cute! He's very bright, huh? All this at 8 weeks, too - I can believe he's a handful (MONSTER? Noooo!) no matter how adorable his pictures are. Congrats :) good luck with him!
  • Dave you HAVE to come out to hunt ducks with us!
  • Gen, we WILL! Hana is gonna have a little competition this time. ;-)
  • Exactly! Diesel might even make her work harder too. Although hana is a bird hog, she wants to retrieve every downed bird.
  • Better start teaching her to honor. :-P
  • A pup with drive in capable hands? Awesome!! Cute, too!
  • Lol,i thought of Copper when I first read the title. I love the water retrieving video!
