Ma namez Diesel, Ima burd dawg
Well, I did it. I pulled the trigger. Took the plunge. Jumped in head first.
I bought a bird dog. A lab as a matter of fact. A pointing lab.
Candice and I rented a travel trailer, and we drove out to Colorado to pick up the little squirt. It was a great vacation. We got to see some friends (most notably Brad and Jen!). We got to do some hiking. Ate some nice meals. Relaxed. Unplugged. And generally got ourselves ready for the onslaught of raising a puppy. Boy was it a good thing, because this little dude is a MONSTER! lol.
We had originally picked out the name Leroy. But somehow it didn't suit him. The first half of the trip, I kept joking with Candice that I needed to trade in my truck for a diesel to make towing easier. I then proceeded to point out every diesel-powered 3/4 and 1 ton pickups on the road. While driving back from the breeder with the pup, I pointed out a diesel pickup, and Candice said "we should call him Diesel!" So I asked his opinion. He responded immediately! So we named him Diesel. Thirty minutes later, we stopped for him to have a potty break, and he was responding to his name already:
At 8 weeks old, he is already a water-loving retrieving machine! (it's a video, click on it)
He's getting along with Tyson amazingly well. If anything, Tyson is a little too tolerant of his antics so he's learning some bad play habits already. Lucy is the typical, calm, princess, that she is. Doesn't care for him, and he pays little attention to her. Joey and him have had a few bumps in the road, but they're working things out slowly.
I had my pick of 5 males, and let me tell you, it was tough. First and foremost, I was looking for confidence. Then I was looking for interest in me and Candice. I definitely succeeded. He is crazy confident. He'll go right up to anybody or anything. Noises interest him, they don't scare him. Same with objects. He's already a handful at just 9 week so of age. But, he's going to be one hell of a bird dog!

That last video of him is sweet!!!! What a good little retriever. He's going to be one great hunting companion. Congratulations!!!
And it really sounds like he is going to be an awesome hunting companion. Even if he is a little bit of a handful.
Can't wait to read about your hunting expeditions!
I like Diesel's first retrieve! So cute! He's very bright, huh? All this at 8 weeks, too - I can believe he's a handful (MONSTER? Noooo!) no matter how adorable his pictures are. Congrats good luck with him!
