edited October 2011 in Akita (秋田犬)
Hi, I have not yet found alot of information on exporting an akita inu puppy fron japan and am finding it difficult as all links seem to lead to japanese sites i also am having some difficulty finding JA breeders in UK who have reds i know several breeders who i have contacted none of them no anyone with the red akita. Where would i be best to buy an akita inu from japan or UK?

  • Have you looked into the import regulations for the UK? I looked into it once for someone, and there are some sticky points, with the main one being the age of the pup before it can be brought into the country.

It's always easier to get a pup from a breeder in your country, where you can see the kennel and parents, than to import a pup. If you can't find what you're looking for, and you've looked into the import regulations and are comfortable with them, there are Akita breeders in Europe, and of course in Japan as well, that will ship pups.

Importing will cost a fair bit, and you'll really need to trust the breeder if you are unable to personally visit them and see their kennel/dogs.

the import laws all change uk side as of the 1st of jan, making it much easier and cheaper to import. huge plus side is you can fetch a puppy in to the country at early as 15 weeks old. with regards whether or not to import or to buy here i think it really depends on what your plans for a puppy are. is it a pet? or are you looking for a potential show/stud prospect?
if you are looking for a show/stud potential puppy then i think importing is your best option, if its pet then i know tsoyu have breeding plans in place to 2 red bitches before the end of the year. although male unconfirmed for one of them the other is been mated to a brindle import so will have the chance to produce both reds and brindles. tycon also have a red to red mating planned.
all the uk japanese akita inu breeders have reds. i own a red bitch myself, although she is only 12months old so have no breeding plans in place with her for atleast 18months.
edit to add i'm not endorsing either of these breeders, you really need to research them to make sure you are 100% happy with them.
  • Thank god for the laws changing, it was such a stupid law - sorry, venus!
  • nope i agree totally irina, i'm more than happy the law is changing. there would be no chance of me importing under the old law, venus would never allow an older dog in the house and i really don't want to be kenneling a dog if i can avoid it. i prefer them in the house. but as she will accept puppies it means that importing in a few years is definatly an option now. and also makes possibly taking athena abroad easier as well.
