Male dog questions

edited October 2011 in General
I dunno if my next dog will be male or female, but thought I'd ask to be prepared.

Which would be better vasectomy or neuter? Pros and cons of each?

I like with Vasectomy he'd still have his hormones intact, but It probably still be an issue with male behavior like searching for a female or going crazy if a intact female is around..

I've looked up smegma stuff some say it's less when the dog is neutered is it same if the dog has vasectomy?

Does it smell bad? I read it has metallic smell and some say it only smells bad if there's a health issue.

Do your male dogs clean it up?

Does it drip any?

I know female dogs can have it too, but it's not much of an issue with Saya so I dunno.

Does diet play role in it too? Like if a dog ate a raw diet produced less or more or kibble less or more etc.

I never owned a male dog before so just wondering. Well except for Junior, but he was my dad so I don't know much on him.

I'd probably get another female, but from what I've been told the breed tends to be same sex aggressive so I think male might be best.

Saya and Bella get along just fine never fight or anything, but I dunno,

Does same sex aggression matters if the dog is fixed and raised as a puppy?
Sorry for these questions..

  • You are so cute. Well Koda still has smegma and he is neutered. So does my friend's Rott who is 9 months old and got neutered 3 months ago.

Ummm I don't think it smells, but I really don't try and smell it.

Well, Sevuk has a vasectomy and I prefer it over the neuter for what you said earlier, the hormones. I've just heard so much stuff recently that makes me lean towards the vasectomy vs the neuter. About the dog going after intact girls in heat and what not, it really depends on where you live too. In my neighborhood almost all the dogs are fixed, so it's really easy to take care of Sevuk. Oh, and Sevuk has the smegma too, but he always cleans it up, and I've never noticed a smell coming from it. Oh, plus Sevuk's diet is home cooked food.

Honestly, I think you'll be find if you raise them together when the other dog is a puppy. :)

Edit: Forgot to add: Sevuk gets along with all genders of dogs, intact or not, so I don't really believe the same sex aggression thing as a general rule. It really depends on the dog.
  • Thanks.

I don't think I'll be smelling him or anything, but most posts I see on google for dog smegma lot people say it smells metallic so I assumed it smelled from the person standing up. I dunno. lol

I'd like the idea of vasectomy only intact dogs I know of is coyotes, but I don't go checking my neighbor's dogs.. lol Luckily all neighbor dogs don't wonder in my yard except Amy the rat terrier she runs right in it to charge at Bella and Saya.

I plan to threaten to call cops on this neighbor next time. First time I was too focused on getting Bella to come back to me she did.

I've only been around two male dogs before Mike our gsd/mix I never noticed any smell or stuff there coarse I was a kid..

Junior he was OK, but he kinda ruined it for me with my perception on males.. he was very resource guarder he'd guard his kibble, space, treats. He'd finish his food so fast then rush for the two other dogs to push them out of the way. I look back on it I guess it's more of parent's fault for not managing him right.

Feeding him separate. Not giving him enough exercise or training. This dog only knew how to sit.

Seeing him attack Pearly and Dink just scared me so much he'd go right for their throats reminds me of dog fighting videos. >.<

I don't think I'll be getting another pup till probably next year, but thought I'd ask..

Saya is good with males and females she can be defensive with strange dogs, but with slow introduction she gets better I think she'd accept any new pup in the house male or female.
  • RE: Smegma...I have 2 intact males, & I rarely notice the smegma They do a good job of cleaning it up. On the rare times I've noticd it it's very small, & not enough to drip. As for smelling it...wow, they must have their faces right in the dog's crotch or something lol

Same sex aggression, I don't know if it's a male thing or a female thing, but as I said I have 2 intact males [ Shikoku & Dutch Shepherd ] who get along just fine. They're both great with other dogs as well, regardless of sex. However, both my boys were pretty young when they were introduced to each other [ Wraith was 7 months old when Fate came along, Fate was 3 months old ] so I have no idea if that's why they get on so well.

However, a friend of mine has an intact male lab/chow mix & an intact male pitbull, & they get along together great, & they get on great with my boys too.

I don't know if females are different tho, I imagine it'll mostly depend on each individual dog & amount of socialization, as well as how accepting the original pups are to having other dogs in their house.

I'm still not sure on Vasectomy vs Neuter...I'll have to decide soon tho. LOL

Hope this helped Nicole :) As always, your mileage may vary. ~

I've never noticed on either of my two male dogs. (first dog was a long, long time ago though) and Conker was neutered when he was real young, so maybe that has something to do with it? Either way, he does a good job of keeping himself clean down there...
And I've never noticed a smell or not.
I have no idea if neutering, a vasectomy or leaving intact will affect it. Not much help there.

Conker is fine with both male and female dogs. He's gotten into more fights with Juneau (female) than any male dog he's ever met.
  • When Jack was still intact he got smegma. Usually he would clean it himself, but occasionally it would gunk up his sheath and obstruct the flow of pee. All it took was a damp, warm cloth to gently pull it off. He has been neutered for a while now and hasn't got smegma since.

I would personally rather leave a dog intact rather than vasectomy, but I suppose if I had to alter him for legal (or similar) reasons a vasectomy would be better than a neuter. I think it would be harder to "prove" to people that your dog is altered if he had a vasectomy vs a neuter.
  • I forgot to mention about the vasectomy:

Here in LA county there is the mandatory spay/neuter law for dogs and cats over 4 months. Sevuk is registered as sterilized but it gets pretty annoying at times when people come up to you saying, "Oh, I thought he wasn't fixed" after I've explained to them about the vasectomy. He has his city tag on at all times when we go out (it's on his harness) and I even have a copy of his LA city license registration and a copy of the proof of vasectomy from the vet.

I just feel better having the vasectomy over the intact male if I'm not going to be breeding him because in case he does happen to get out, I know he won't impregnate a female in the process.
  • Idk, intact boys are a pain in the ass if there are girls around that could be bred. They stop listening and mark and will follow bitch pee trails completely ignoring you, and they do get testy and can be very aggressive with other if there is a bitch around they both want.

The one time my mild mannered CO and mild mannered Shiba boy fought each other...it's hard for me to even say this since it is sooo not how they are 99.999% of the time... was when they both had their faces in in-heat bitch pee and she was flagging them thru the fence. That's possibly their perceived most important resource for both of them. More than food. So, castration IMO is still the easiest thing for most PET owners to live with long term.

I pick my Shibas up a lot, and the smegma gets on my arms or shirt so I notice the smell much more because they always penis crown when they are held. To me it smells faintly like pine or pitch. I also noticed the same smell when some of them got an eye infection last year, but then it is also quite common for the Shiba boys to stand over the heads of the girls during play so it's possible it's the same stuff. The neutered boys don't have it.
  • We had two intact GSD and none of them smelled or something, dogs tend to clean their thing.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I'll get another pup till a year or year and half or something.

    I wish..
There's some pups born nearby, but I plan to wait for next time. I probably need to buy my own freezer Saya's takes up half the chest freezer with her meat, bone in items, and organs.. lol

The dog will weigh from 30 to 40lb so I want to be sure I can keep stock of a good variety of foods for Saya, Bella and new pup.
  • @okiron She's holding out on us lol

    Just kidding, Nicole ;) haha

Lindsay, you crack me up. I have never heard the term "penis crown" but of course I knew exactly what it was, and now it will definitely be in my vocabulary! And the standing over the heads of the girls....! Ha! (I mean, I know you're being pretty straightforward in your description, but somehow the whole description just made me laugh!)

I am happy to say that I have never noticed smegma. My boys are neutered, of course, but they do clean themselves up too. And I am happy that there is relatively little penis crowning going on either. Toby is excited by food. Oskar has done it so rarely that it was kind of like when he first lifted his leg--he had to look to check to see what was going on! I'm quite content with that, esp. since my GSD did some serious "penis crowning" (except, believe me, it wasn't just a crown) every single time he got in the car. He found car rides particularly stimulating. I could have seen a lot less of all that!

There are fixed dogs who still have issues with smegma, so... As for my intact dog, he always kept himself clean.

Bitches in heat are not a concern because it's not legal to have them outside (except potty-breaks et cetera), so if there is a problem: report the owner to city hall. Besides, the older your dog gets, he begins to realize he doesn't have access to all the females.

The one thing to watch out for: fixed dogs are likely to attack unfixed.
The owners will say your dog started the fight, but they are being self-centric. It sounds bizarre, but it's true.
  • I thought I would ask here, instead of making a new thread.

How often do intact (or vasectomied) dogs mark in the house? It's really the only thing I'm concerned about with having an intact dog. Does it only happen when there are females around, or does it depend on the dog?
  • I've had visiting males both neutered and intact, mark in my house, but the only time my boys pee inside is when there are girls in heat, and it's always the intact boys that do it.

Our intact male dog has never mark inside the house or on the outside (knock on wood), even with both intact and speuter dogs inside/around house. He is more interested in marking the land in our area. I think if we had plants on the floor he may try to mark them.
  • None of my boys [ intact ] have marked in the house yet...Thank God! lol

Wraith doesn't mark at all tho, & Fate marks outside. [ but neither boy lifts their leg yet ] ~
  • Kuma doesn't have smegma that I can tell, but he licks himself down there a lot to keep it clean. As a younger male dog, he marked in the house few times. But learned that it was not okay with us. And once he marked in the house this past cycle when Sachi was in heat. But he is 4 years old and it has been very few times he has marked inside.
  • Sevuk has never marked in the house, and I'm not complaining lol
