What is a safe age to start running with my JA?

I have heard different things about hip displacement from people but this is how i get my exercise and would love to take him with me. He's fourteen weeks now.

  • Different people will probably tell you different things...

But to actually run with an Akita (not little jogging bursts, but to actually run any distance), I would wait until he is at least a year old, if not closer to 18 months. Running is pretty hard on developing joints and long bones.
  • I agree with sunyata - at least 18 months. Akitas do not need a whole lot of exercise.
  • Actually I have been told by professional handlers with more than 30 yrs experience with large dogs and ortho. vet folks that 24 months is even better.

With a large breed 24 months! I wouldn't run with them any younger than that!! You will put a lot of strain on his tendons/ligaments/joints, etc. Not a good idea.

If you would like to lightly jog with him, then you could start at 18 months. Honestly, I don't think he'll run, but give you a jog. They are not the most athletic dogs. I used to borrow my neighbor's Ridgebacks to run with and leave my Rott with them for a reason.

You are not going to cause hip dysplasia by running. If your JA has it, it's because it is part of his genetics and therefore is inevitable. What you don't want to do is cause strain on his body that will cause early arthritis, joint injury, and pain.

If you are going to run with him, also seek advice on supplements. Which I would give to any athletic dog anyways like, glucosamine/chondroitn, fish oil, etc.
