Dermoid sinus with akitas?

edited January 2012 in Akita (秋田犬)
I want to ask here where we have lots of people that have you ever heard about akita who have disease called dermoid sinus? Normally this is problem with dogs who have ridgeback and some rare cases with boxers or chow chows. We have now first case here in Finland and we are desperately trying to find more information about this!

Thing is that this disease is hereditary for sure, they just dont know yet how. Most say it's resessive and some say it's dominant but sure thing is that if we have one case there most likely is another somewhere.

Here is wikipedia link where is basic info about DS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermoid_sinus

We would be ver thankful for all info people have! If you know anything about this disease please tell us! It might help this young akita who is going to have big surgery soon and he is not yet even one year old :(

Best regards

  • I let Saija know that I found out about one case in a rescued Akita in Maryland some years ago; the dog was operated on and was fine. I e-mailed my vet neurologist about this, and she said it can happen in any breed and that she'd had one case in a Cocker Spaniel. She said the only strong genetic association was in the ridged breeds, so probably it's just a developmental fluke in Akitas if so few cases are known.
