Was pretty amazed to find this little girl in the pet section of a hardware store in Yokohama today.

  • And for almost $2,000 USD! That's nuts (expensive).

Poor pup, she needs to be running around playing with other pups, not sitting in a box. :oT

    ----
  • That hurts to see. It makes me want to break her out of jail.
  • =[

    someone bust her out!
  • poor girl! :(
  • Poor thing! Looks like it's inevitable that all breeds eventually end up in pet stores :\ ~
  • I don't think 148,000 is really expensive here, I see Shibas selling for the same or more. An English Bulldog goes for almost 350,000 and a Chihuahua and go for over 200,000!!
  • As horrible as it is to see that poor little thing in a pet store (I agree, bust her out!), I'm somewhat amazed at how much better her living circumstances are than what they would have been in pet stores here. The fact that she has a toy and a separate spot for elimination are what I notice in particular.
  • I do agree with Notoriousscrat on that pet stores I seen the pups don't have a dog bed or toys and have to potty everywhere..

Still sad to see I prefer going to a breeder to get my pup..
  • When will it end?
  • I see Shiba in pet stores pretty often, Hokkaido and Kai on occasion.
  • It's almost guaranteed now that a pet store at the local mall near me has a shiba there. I try my best not to go towards that entrance of the mall anymore. It's one of those things that just breaks my heart.

Not just for shibas, but for all the dogs that are in there. About a year ago I walked into that store to see if there was a shiba there. There were two. A cream shiba and a b&t. I came back a month later, the same B&T was still there, but she looked really thin and fragile. No one had purchased her yet so she was still living her life out at the pet store. I'm unsure if she ever got a home, but it was sad to see her there. :/
  • My friend ended up taking a shiba at the petstore after it had been there for three months and the guy was going to just get rid of her because he couldn't sell her. Which means bringing her down to the kill shelter. That dog has issues from being in there so long! But she's alive and safe.
  • So, the Shibas in the pet stores in the US are pretty poor specimens in general. Lots of demand here, mass producers and lots of space to breed whatever whenever. Is the same true for the Kai, Hokka and Shibas in Japanese pet stores? Or do they tend to be the same quality as those born at a show or hunting kennel?
  • Basically there are breeders who will unload pups with poor conformation, or the left overs of a litter, to brokers for pet stores. This is why most of the NK you see in pet stores here are poor examples of the breed.
