Saya has never done it, but if there is a spot she wants to sniff she'll put her head down and sniff for long time and if I put light tension on leash she won't budge.
I eventually just tell her to leave it and she does and gets a treat.
I can't remember either of our shibas ever trying that... Attempting to tow you along, nabbing birds out of the air (having to pull the bird out by the only part still available a wing-tip), getting a squirrel or rabbit while on a long lead (and then wanting to go back to that exact spot the next four or five days just in case there is another there), when one dog flushed it towards the other.

he is very wary of the neighbor's bbq pit when it is moved out from its normal place. i have to carry him to get him to his "pee spot" cause he plants his feet, lol
Arg does that when he's got a scent, but he's in a harness. One day he was so steadfast on backing up that the harness started to move over his head and squish his face up.
Ed, my shibas do that too--have caught birds out of the air, and then if they see an animal or catch an animal then they are obsessed with the area--in my case, I've seen them do it for weeks! And one of my shibas still remembers that once there was a squirrel in my friend's car's engine compartment, and he investigates her car everytime she comes over though it was years ago and she now has a different car!
