Yokohama International Dog Show

edited February 2012 in General
I went to the Yokohama dog show this past Sunday (my first dog show) just to have a look. Was a bit disappointed with the Nihon ken numbers, there were a grand total of 2 Akitas, 1 Hokkaido and 7 Shibas. If you ever want your Nihon Ken to win a FCI dog show just bring them to Japan!! As far as numbers went the most popular breeds were Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Dachshunds, Golden Retrievers and English Bulldogs. I know the Akiho shows are more important to Akita enthusiasts but was still a bit surprised to see 10 Great Danes and only 2 Akitas.
The other thing I thought funny was that people actually brought their dogs to watch the dog show! I still find it weird that I get so surprised when I see a baby buggy (pram) being pushed down the street and there is a baby in it! In Tokyo at least it is usually a dog :)

Best of Breed Hokkaido (not hard to win when there is only one!!)

An AA Best of Breed (again pretty hard not to win there is only one)

  • Cool pics, but yeah, it is kind of sad there weren't more NKs! Maybe you'd see more at regional shows? That's a nice looking Akita, though! (The JA)
  • My understanding is that Akiho dominates the Japanese Akita activity. In fact JKC defers to Akiho on just about everything JA related. I think in the JKC shows that are regional you'll see more activity. What a lot of people do not know is that there is a decent American Akita population in Japan. I would say just a tad bit larger than the Japanese Akita population here.
  • Well that was the first AA I can ever remember seeing in Japan but yet again I haven't seen many JA either. I have seen a few Kai looking dogs about but always wonder if they are just a shiba mix. Shibas are a dime a dozen.
  • Poor Shibas! A dime a dozen! *lol* Yeah, I didn't even know what a Shiba was til I lived in Osaka in the 90s then saw them everywhere. And most of my students had not actually seen an Akita, though of course they knew about them (Hachiko), though some thought Hachiko was a Shiba! But it was seeing all those Shibas that made me fall in the love with them.....

But of course, I was in a very urban area, and most people simply didn't have the space for big dogs.....
