First Hokkaido!

Today I met my first Hokkaido Ken while walking on the castle grounds in Morioka. A guy on a bike with a dog passed us on the street, I saw its rump and thought "too big to be a Shiba!" so I caught up to him at the intersection. Our dialog consisted of me going, "Sumimasen. Hokkaido Ken?" and pantomiming asking to pet his dog. He graciously allowed me, and the dog was very gentle and tolerant. I got a photo!

I have now officially met all six breeds. :D

Oh, and I have been keeping track of all the dogs I have seen in Japan so far.

Three red and white King Charles Spaniels going for a walk in Tokyo (near Asakusa)
A girl with something small and fluffy (Papillon?) on the Shinkansen to Morioka
A red/brown retriever like dog with a slightly curly tail beside the tracks to Odate
A white spitz breed with red-lined ears (maybe Kishu or Hokkaido?) in a pet store in Odate
A Golden Retriever mix and Bassett on the corner in Morioka during rush hour
An old, small salt and pepper dog with a condition that made it lean to the right in Morioka
A very large, dark red Shiba outside the ironworks shop in Morioka - it wasn't friendly
A senior Hokkaido with a bicyclist at the castle in Morioka; I got to pet him (the dog not the bicyclist)

    Update 3/4
A lady with a red sesame Shiba walking through a snowy cemetery by the road to Tsunagi
A small dog (unseen) barking from inside a pet stroller at the Tokyo train station
A black and tan Shiba and a Pug for sale at a pet shop in Chiba
A black Labrador Retriever tied outside a 100 yen store in Chiba

    Update 3/6
A beautiful, thickly-built and jacketed Golden Retriever at the Mt. Fuji visitor center

    Update 3/7
A grizzled old Beagle mix on the footpath to see the Snow Monkeys outside Nagano
A red Akita being walked on the streets of Yudanaka
A Shiba mix at the foot bath in Yudanaka
  • Good photo! Will you be going to the NIPPO show in Hachioji tomorrow?
  • Sweet!
It's neat how you are keeping track of what dogs you see and where!
  • @Jbm0024 I didn't know about it, and don't think I could make it at this point. We're still doing more Tohoku stuff in the morning, wont be back to Tokyo (Chiba specifically) until around 4:30pm.
  • Very cool! I love the idea of the gaijen running after someone and saying "hokkaido ken?" And I admit I had a moment of total enviousness thinking you got a Hokka!
  • Neat! A Hokka! :o)
  • Solo cute!

    Not solo I meant soo
  • I think I am jealous. :) That Hokkaido is pretty cute.
  • So adorable! I'd love to meet a Hokkaido one day.
  • Oh very nice! I gotta meet the hokkas here in Denmark soon. Have to satisfy my curiousity! XD I have heard so many stories, and one makes me think "I WANT a hokka" and the next makes me think "Wow could I handle that?", but the stories are just that, stories, and I've never actually met a hokka live.

Gotta admit, I was laughing at the mental image of you running after the guy on the bike yelling about hokkaido ken! XD LOL
  • Spent all day in Chiba/Funabashi and saw no dogs. Not a one. Even the friend's house we went to - supposedly they have an American Cocker - no dog to be seen.

My friend got excited when she saw pictures of Ghidora, our brindle male Akita. She knew he was tora, and her daughter's music teacher has Kai Kens.
  • I saw an Akita today! I was too slow to catch up with it and see where it went. :(
