  • Long-haired Akita, blowing coat????

I think its a longhaired shiba! Something about the facial expression (I do not acknowledge your presence, human!) makes me think that, and size is right. I think the long-coated Shibas have it doubly hard: they have to really work to overcome their fluffy looks! ;)

Hey, have you seen many Shibas? If so, I'm curious about their size. I remember seeing mostly smallish (ie. standard sized) Shibas in Japan, with some bigger ones, but I was talking to a Japanese woman awhile back, and I had Toby with me, and she said she thought Toby (who was about 35 pounds then) was more like the size of Shibas she knew in Japan, not "these small American ones" as she said. Just wondered if you'd seen many Shibas and had thoughts! (I should ask this of someone who lives in Japan, probably, but I just thought about it right now!)
  • Finnish Lapphund is good guess could be a long haired shiba, but color is different could have a mix in down the lines maybe? Cute dog either way.

About shiba size being correct in Japanese or something I dunno.. I mean in Japan there used to be many different types of shiba and many of them are of different sizes some smaller some bigger.. Coarse I'm no expert on it.. Mino shiba, san in and others.. Sorry if I spelled it wrongly. :\
  • I actually wonder if it's a Karafuto ken/sakhalin husky. I'm not sure what size they're supposed to be.

I say long coated shiba, or some sort of shiba/chow mix.

If I remember correctly with the Karafuto ken/sakhalin husky, they are close to Siberian Husky size. Anything under 30lbs should not be used for sled pulling, which the karafuto ken was used for. http://metropolis.co.jp/features/feature/no-tomorrow/

It is not a Shiba, Shikoku, or any of the medium breeds - I was able to ask that much, and he was emphatic on that point. He said yoken, which as far as I know just means young dog (it's an ge category in our shows). He also said another word which was more guttural than Japanese so I assumed it was foreign and the name of the breed, but I surely didn't recognize it. It could have been his pronunciation/accent or it could be something I've never heard of.

I would guess it was about 40lbs and definitely bigger than a Shiba and the facial structure under the coat seemed wrong for a Shiba too. Of course if its just a puppy, who knows what its adult size will be. I can't tell if it's a very high contrast sesame or if it's more of a saddle pattern (like a German shepherd).

In regards to Shibas in Japan, I've only seen three and only one was "close" (about 6' away, it wasn't friendly enough to approach). The close one did seem substantial in size. I'm afraid I don't spend enough time with Shibas in the US to know for sure, but it seemed the same size if not a smidgen bigger. The two far away ones looked small but who knows their ages, if my perspective was forced, etc. One also had a sickle tail.

Here's 2 pics of a long haired Shiba that I recently posted on the other side.

  • No idea what it is, but it is a very good looking dog!
  • @InuRyuu Wow, it really does look like a long haired Shiba - and that is what I thought originally and why I asked. Maybe he didn't understand my question, or the word he used (that I thought might be the breed) meant "long coat"....

@sukoshi's mom, it definitely wasnt an Akita, longhaired or of any age. I know my 'keeters. :)
  • Doesn't look like a Finnish Lapphund to me--I have one and have been around a lot of them, and that dog simply doesn't quite look like one to me. The coat type isn't quite right, and the coloring would be odd to say the least.

It does look like a longhaired Shiba to me--or perhaps crossed with something, though who knows.

My male Shiba is 40 pounds. ;) I think it really looks like a long coat Shiba, a sesame, but who knows.

It just looked big to me - I could be totally wrong about the weight and size due to its long cot. I really thought some kind of Shiba (mix maybe) and it does match the other photos very well. The owner was emphatic that it wasn't, but ah, I guess he could be wrong too...

After all look how many people think they have a Japanese Akita when they don't. ;)
  • Looks like a mutt to me. Yo-ken also means western dog. In Japan the term is often used to describe a dog of unknown heritage showing non-native traits.
  • Sweet from now on I'll call them Yo-ken Akitas instead of Tweenies or Akitadoodles
