Sad day, very sad day...

edited March 2008 in General

Today i found out that the government here is preparing a law to ban the 7 breeds considered dangerous. I mean completely forbid people from breeding them or importing them, and making them neuter or spay every dog existent in Portugal, of those breeds.

The breeds are: Pitbull, Rottweiler, Argentinian Mastiff, Brazilian Fila, American Staff, Staff Bull and Tosa Inu.

It's the easy solution to the "dog attack problem", just not allowing people to have them. There's no attempt to even try to select the people that have them. It's just pathetic and stupid. I know a bunch of responsible people that have some of these breeds, I even know breeders of some of these breeds. It's so unfair! Because of stupid people, stupid people come and make laws, and of course it is easier to target the dogs and not the owners. It won't take long, if this law goes through, for this country to loose some amazing breeds. It's just one of those days I feel I was born in the wrong country...

That's terrible. I don't know how to react to that. People who advocate for those breeds are in the minority. I'm sure an overwhelming majority of people are happy to see such a law passed. It really is sad that the irresponsible few can ruin it for so many others, and for the loving companions that could be bred and given to responsible homes. The one slightly good thing is that they aren't going to euthanize any of the existing dogs. Not that that fact makes things much better.

I have often wondered if a licensing program would be a happy compromise. Kinda like a background check for owning a hand gun, but different.  If behaviorists could get trained to certify new homes from those breeds, then responsible owners could still provide loving homes for them. It wouldn't cost the government much to make something like that happen. In fact, it might even stimulate some job growth for behaviorists. Hell, they could even offset the cost of enforcement by charging a licensing fee for potential owners. Not that I support this kind of discrimination in general, but I would take that over a blanket ban without even thinking twice.

Grrrrrr. It is a sad day.

Is the law just being introduced or is it near passing?  Why don't they just ban all "Molosser" type dogs while they are at it.

I hate this type of shit.

I've thought of the licensing thing too. The thing here is we have what a think can be called a pretty good set of laws. The problem always seems to be enforcing them. By law, every dog in Portugal is to be walked with a leash AND a muzzle. No one enforces that, and so people don't care. I'm not saying that it would be nice for the dog, or even the owner to muzzle up and leash up for every walk. So if this thing goes forward, I don't think it will change the attack scenario much. Cause the irresponsible people will keep being irresponsible and breaking these kinds of laws, and those are the ones that let those dogs out on their own, or make them into the killers they turn out to be, eventually. These people and the mass hysteria about "the killer dogs" added up to this situation.

The law has been proposed and seems to be seriously taken into consideration by the Agricultural Department...

Ugh, how awful.  This is clearly just an attempt to give a quick fix to a complex problem.

    so stupid.

On a rare case is it the dog that causes a problem, compared to the owner.

What about the yippee ones that nip and could take a finger off?

  • edited November -1
Those yippee ones are sometimes looked upon as cute even if they're growling their throats off and bite even their owners. I saw poodle owners get bit by their dogs frequently and the owners finding it funny. I think it's almost never the dog, it's almost always the owner's or the breeder's fault. Poor breeding and/or incompetent owners, I mean.

Obviously you guys can guess how I feel about that....Yell

It is sad to see any of those breeds on the list - but given your current situation thank god Akita Inu are not on it!

Yeah, for my particular case, this law is not affecting the breed I want. Just out of curiosity, in Spain the potentially dangerous breed list is all those 7 AND the Akita Inu.

One of the stupid things is that, for instance, there are 2 Tosa Inu in Portugal,  and neither of them ever attacked anyone. Although I did go to a dog show that got a Tosa, and the judge was kind of wary of him. Very impressive dog!

That is so short-sighted and very aggravating.

So is the law allowing you to keep the dog as long as its fixed?

Im with Jess...I just cant even get started on this topic without getting heated and I would be preaching to the choir here!

So stupid......For a while here in Topeka, where I live in Kansas they were telling pitbull owners that they had to bring their dogs to an animal shelter to be put to sleep...I had a 2 year old make pitbull (below) named Blaze.  My big baby!! We got A LOT of visits from animal control, thanks to our neighbors....who just assumed he was an agressive dog. Ugh so dumb!

The other day at the Shiba get together in Atlanta that Brad and Jen are missing because they are too good for us all and decided to move to some hillibilly town in Taos.  (intentional long sentince.)

We noticed how many Rottie's were there. The funny part about it was how many of them I saw on their backs with their legs in the air being submissive to other dogs.  That and Sasha hiding behind Rach and I, while people were trying to see her.

Oh Brad get this since you and Jen moved and missed the Shiba get together again, we all took a Shiba picture.  Funniest thing ever Sasha oribiting the group of people, she had no idea what to do with everyone surrounding Rach and I.

Haha. Yeah Chad. It was hilarious (I was there too). Poor Sasha, dressed in a pink t-shirt that was waaaaay to big for her. We were all posing for the camera and every thirty seconds or so Sasha would uncomfortably trot into my field of view on the left, pause, look around, and then trot out on the right. It truly was adorable.

That's funny - she was like... WTF? Mom? You ok? Help, someone, help???

Yeah Sasha was a bit panicky because she couldnt get to us.  It was pretty funny.  We were holding Niko and as Chad just said Niko is thinking put me down and Sasha is thinking pick me up!!
