edited June 2012 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
I've seen many posts on the parents of pets and thought I'd show you guys the parents of my Niko.

His mother is Foxy and father Rumble is black/tan, Foxy is red sesame.
Soon I plan on getting another shiba for Niko, his wife, so to speak. In the meantime however I wanted to get a larger dog and a friend for Niko as moving into our large new apartment has him playing with only humans. Doubt thats much fun lol so I planned on getting either a Shikoku or Hoddaiko. I'm up for any breeder suggestions or I'll look up on this site a little more

  • Welcome to the NK side of things. I don't think you're likely to find a Hokka in NA, as you'll note if you dig around a bit. They are pretty rare dogs. There's plenty of info on the Shikoku, though. You probably want to meet some before you make that decision.

As for Niko and his "wife" um...from what you've posted on the Shiba side, it doesn't seem like you'd be much in a position to breed any time soon. Maybe that's a long term goal for the future? If so, I think you'd need other dogs to do it with--Niko's a lovely dog, but not the best dog to use as foundation stock.
  • Welcome. Those breeds may not be the best apartment dogs, nor are they likely to be a good companion for a Shiba (and vice versa) since all of these breeds can be argumentative and quarrlesome. It's not impossible, and people here have both breeds, but you may want to wait until you are out of an apartment and have a yard for the larger breed as they are quite active, and you should definitely meet them and some breeders before hand.
  • I wanted another Japanese dog and I liked the Shikokus for their sizes. What Japanese breed goes best with a shiba inu is where I'm stuck at. Any advice because a shiba was my first Japanese dog, I wouldn't know. Also the apartment isn't really much of an issue, I call it apartment because we're renting but the size of it is basically a whole property with a medium to large yard surrounded by walls.
  • There are always exceptions because every dog is an individual. But in general, I think you'll find that the Kai Ken is a better match for a Shiba's temperament. That being said, there is no substitute for meeting the parents of the puppy you hope to get and seeing how they interact with other dogs. It's no guarantee, but it is far more likely to tell you what your puppy will be like than reading any general breed description.
  • @nicelo- FYI, the America's Pet Registry (APRI) is a registry created/used by the puppy mill industry.

  • @sukoshi's mom I did see the APRI but I honestly didn't know what it meant before looking into it more. I already brought Niko by the time I found out where his parents came from and I guess that's my own fault for not going deeper about his background.
It frustrates me because when you mentioned this message I went straight to my breeder and got no response till this day and I doubt I will. I hate to say that because of living here in Nassau I'm not aware of these industries and hate that I wasn't aware of APRI and kennels that were created/used by puppymills. Even aware of these industries, I still had no knowledge of how they perceived to be, or the little scams they pull.
Where I live it is either a legit breeder or a home breeder who were equal in their amount of honesty and reliability. Also the island is 21 by 7 miles and there's no way kennels and puppymills can go unnoticed.
  • We've talked about this more on the Shiba side (since Shibas are the NKs most vulnerable to puppy mills, though there have been some HORRIFYING cases of Akitas rescued from mills in the midwest too--it's hard to imagine any dog living like that, but an AA living out its entire life in cages stacked one on another? Ugh!). But anyway, many people have been duped by these mills, so you're just joining a group of many of us who have mill dogs. Now that you know, though, the point is to help educate others so that it doesn't happen to them, and be aware of how awful these places can be. There are a lot of signs that point to mills, as we're discussing on the Shiba side, but for anyone over here who might want to see more about this, check out our thread on spotting the mills (I think you may have to be a member on the shiba side to see it, though): http://www.shibainuforum.org/forum/discussion/8015/forum-game-spot-the-puppy-mill-the-resurrection/p1
