Koda stopped growing at 9 months old. He filled out by about 2 1/2. But then he had ACL surgery. So it's hard to say what would have happened from last July to his 3rd BDay in April. He lost some back leg muscle. We used to run together.
@shishiinu yeah as soon as a male is available from either Toro or kishin we're ready for him @tjbart17 how did koda hurt his leg? @brada1878@sjp051993 thanks
@Mike283 It's a long story that I'm still pretty upset by. Koda and I were hit by a car that ran on 12/29/2010. On July 7, 2011 he completely tore his ACL. When the surgeon went in there was scar tissue. That usually takes 6 months to build up, so the hit and run probably hurt the ACL and the knee tried to stabilize with scar tissue. It was a time bomb that eventually tore. He had TPLO surgery and was down for 5 months. I pray that neither of us ever have to relive that.
@tjbart17 sorry to hear that, hope he heals quickly Toshi was accidentally given free roam of the entire second floor for 7 hours today, he destroyed nothing, I can't believe how well he behaves
@Mike283 Koda is doing great! It's been almost a year since his surgery/implant was placed and he's such a trooper. He just doesn't run on hard surfaces too much. He likes keeping to grassy areas.
@Mike283 That may be a good thing. Koda is awesome. I think he's perfect in every way, but he's not as agile and fast as other Kais who are smaller. I want Mika to stay small. It just seems really fun to watch them climb and run like Kais should.
@shishiinu @brada1878 @sjp051993 @tjbart17 Toshi had his first experience off leash in the wild and did very well. Had some slight issue with the Garmin astro but I think it was my mistake. He was exposed to about 10-15 .22 gunshots over the entire day. They didn't seem to really bother him at all. He moved very well on steep mountainsides, I was surprised on the type of terrain he was comfortable with. I went with a buddy and my 12 year old nephew. Toshi was on point most of the time but never was too far from us. When we got back I helped my friend out some stuff away and sent my nephew to take care of some stuff just under a quarter mile away (I had line of site in him)..anyway, Toshi decided my nephew needed the most protection so he went with him. I thought that was cool because he doesn't really have any bond with my nephew but still realized he needed protection without being told or asked to go with him.
@Mike283 That's awesome! Koda is a very good boy off leash, and probably would've made the same decision. I have an 11 year old niece, and he always keeps her in his line of sight. We went off leashing yesterday, and he sticks with her, but always looks to me first to make sure I ok it.
You do other off leash stuff right? I really don't worry about Kais being off leash. I think it's the dog not the breed at all. It seems like the US perception is never to let them off leash, but they're hunting dogs. It's what they are supposed to do.
Good stuff Mike! Man I can't wait to hit the mountains with you guys. It sounds like you should have no problem hunting with Toshi. More exposure he gets out in the mountains, the more comfortable he'll get hunting.
@Mike283 - That is GREAT he did well around gunshots. I always worry about Kai around noise, but they always impress me with it. Also, that's a super cool Kai move for him to follow your nephew. I dig it. )
We all need to do a meet soon - I'll bring Kishin.
@shishiinu I'd really like to go back up around January when it's snowing, it's just iffy cause winners sometimes make the area inaccessible no matter what kind of vehicle
@brada1878 yeah definitely. How much does kishin weigh now?
Cool, the three they have up there are Polaris rangers and a crazy off-road jeep...those are the only vehicles that have never gotten stuck that I know of, but during winter there are areas they can't go through because of snow
