Show on dogs in Japan

I've been watching some episodes of this series just to learn more about Japan, so obviously I was pretty interested in the one about dogs! It's kind of interesting. No new information, really, as it's more about the way Japanese people feel about their dogs than it is about the Japanese breeds (although they are discussed). I guess it's worth watching. It's not long or anything.

  • That was kinda cool. Would have liked to see a bit more about the Nihon Ken, though.
  • Um... where do you get one of those dog bark translators.... ???? That was pretty cool...lol

I have no clue if this works, but I'd rather use the money for a freezer for Saya or meat.. haha

I love how the "customers who viewed this item also viewed..." section on the Amazon link is full of anti-bark collars, lol.
  • Haha I didn't notice that!
    funny
  • Finally got a chance to sit down and watch the video. Interesting, even with cheesy production values. =) I do like that it places the native Japanese breeds into context, because no, the Nihon ken do not exist in isolation. It's too bad that the brevity of the program meant they had to gallop through some historical material far too quickly. Meanwhile, the longish last segment about the aging Shiba was very difficult to watch... but still a real suckerpunch, as overdone as it is. At least the video, overall, was basically sincere, and respectful in my opinion.

On the other hand, unfortunately, articles like that one from the Guardian drive me crazy... I feel like they're always written in a snide, condescending manner, loaded with statistics that are meant to shock. The media has been reporting the same things about Japanese women's obsession with "pampered pooches" for years (and make no mistake, it's represented as a very gendered phenomenon, despite their one male interviewee). The implication is that it's some kind of economic excess or psychological problem that is happening at the expense of the future social welfare of the nation, and all these dog-crazy women with their "surrogate children" are to blame.

The video at least tried to naturalize the relationship by showing how dogs and families actually DO go together...

    (okay, end rant.)
  • @jeffnkazuko

    Interesting article

Some of the luxuries on offer include dog kimonos, fake fur coats and $1,500 Hermes leather tote bags and collars. Dog buggies, nappies, sunglasses and hats are “must have” items for any self-respecting dog owner...........

Please. Any self respecting dog owner wouldn't by that crap. It's a dog, not a doll.
  • Watched it finally pretty good. end of it was sad of coarse Kunta reminded me of Dink our 16 year old catahoula mix she would cry and whine when he had hard time walking.. :(

Made me remember her and cry. :(

I never heard of the Serve story pretty interesting.

I know someone who puts dog goggles on their dog, but it's due to a eye medical issue not for fashion..

I agree any self respecting dog owner of any country wouldn't buy that too..

I plan get a nice kimono for Saya on Halloween picture contest, but she won't be wearing it every day just for the contest.. hehe

I seen some leashes and collars being sold that have jewels in it my god the prices for it was crazy!
  • "It's a dog, not a doll."
    amen, brother!
  • "It's a dog, not a doll." Exactly. I loved the quote from the guy who said he dog just isn't into walking!!
  • @curlytails Yes, I think there's some hysteria over people who choose to have dogs and treat them like family. Heck, I have three kids and I still get the occasional comment about how my energy would be better spent on more children than having dogs. Three isn't enough? F@$%.

I think people who criticize women for not having children are missing the mark a bit. The reason they're not having children is because it can drastically reduce her quality of life. If they're that interested in upping the national birth rate they should focus on what makes it hard for women to have children and how they can remedy that. Maybe they should stop acting like child-bearing women belong to society and don't have any rights. ANYWAY... that's a little off topic. :oP

I thought the segment of Kuta and how his family cared for him was really nice, even though it was hard to watch.
