Gojira goes to the Grand Canyon - surprising questions from tourists! *Now with photos!*

edited June 2012 in General
Every time I go out with one of my dogs, I end up with a lot of compliments and answering a ton of questions. Promotion and education is a huge part of what we do as a club (AKIHO LA and JACA) so I don't mind at all. Usually people want to know if Gojira is a Shiba, Husky, Coyote, or Fox. Nobody ever guesses Akita, even a few AA owners have been shocked when I tell them.

Today was different, however! We went to the Grand Canyon and there were hundreds of tourists and foreigners there. I recognized German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese discussions about my dog. "Bellissimo!," I overheard multiple times as I walked past. A Japanese couple wanted photos of her. A spanish speaking group asked me numerous questions through a translator.

But what shocked me the most was that all of the foreigners who approached me, or who I overheard talking about Gojira, wanted to know if she was an Akita Inu. Only one person asked if she was a Husky, and he was from California.

Gojira was very nervous at first, especially because we arrived right after some of the tour busses had let out hundreds of people so the crowds were thick. But soon she calmed down, and enjoyed lots of pets from awestruck kids and elderly tourists.

Photos when I get home...

  • Awesome! That sounds pretty cool. Usually I don't like telling people about Conker, since they are ADAMANT he's a fox, cat, or Basenji, or from China, and aren't willing to accept that they could possibly be wrong about him.
  • Hooray! It's so hard to find people who guess Akita inu. Maybe in other countries they are more recognized, probably for obvious reasons like the approved split breed. Every now and then, someone asks if Toki is an Akita, but they always assume American. But it still makes me happy...but it is so far and few when people guess Akita.
  • In my experience, when I mention that my dog is an Akita, most people think of the American Akita and comment that my JA "looks different." Even AA owners ask if my JA is a mix.

@poeticdragon Nice to hear that Gojira is doing well.

Your dogs are very beautiful! I do plan on getting another Akita one day. I love the breed!

I went to Petco last week with Eevee and someone asked if she was a Shikoku. I was so happy! Shikoku was the closest I heard to "Kai Ken" so we talked for a little bit. I even called my girlfriend and brother saying, "the coolest thing just happened!"

I loved it when people asked if my Shiba was a fox hybrid lol. One guy was really rude about it and poked his head through my car window to get a better look (,,#゚Д゚)
  • they called mine hyena. lol
  • The old owners named Eevee, Hyena.
  • Photos! (The first three have been processed in LightRoom, the others have not.)

  • beautiful!
  • shes so beautiful!
  • Such a beautiful akita and a beautiful landscape. :)

I didn't know dogs were allowed on grand canyon Saya would love to go there I myself would too.
  • Yeah, all of the trails allow dogs! You can't take them inside any of the buildings or restrooms, so keep that in mind. But other than that, its a very dog-friendly park.

I'll post some more photos of the Canyon and Gojira making friends with tourists later... These were just my top picks for the photo contest on Facebook.
  • Beautiful photos!
    Snf
  • I had to "share" when I saw these pictures on FB. Absolutely stunning - she looks so pretty and the scenery only flatters. :)

The pictures are very well taken, too!
  • I am getting better with this camera, but you can see a huge difference between the processed and unprocessed photos. For one thing I cannot take a level shot to save my life. XD
  • Beautiful pics! She is gorgeous! I didn't know you could take dogs on the trails either. So many national parks don't allow dogs on the trails, so it's nice to know this one does!

Nicole, you should absolutely take Saya on a road trip! :)
  • Beautiful! Great pictures!!
  • Gojira!!!!!!!!!
  • Great processing, it makes Gojira look stunning against the background! Thanks for sharing!!!
